Bigger wheels, wider tyres, boy racer 4 life ?

Hi all,

Thought I could share a couple of photos of my (wife's) MG ZS EV, which has been lightly modified (initially by @shikoku14 ) with tints all round, and now by myself with the addition of some new wheels and tyres.

The original wheel specifications from MG are 17" X 7", ET41, with 215/50R17 tyres.
The wheel PCD is 5x112mm (same as Audi/VW/Mercedes etc), with a centre bore of 56.1mm

I decided to get a set of slightly larger diameter (18") wheels, with a wider fitment (8.5" wide), and a slightly wider offset (ET35), which means that compared to normal, the wheel edge sits around 1" further towards the arch of the car, and 0.5" closer towards the suspension turret.

I got the wheels off eBay (bit of a bargain, they came with a set of nearly new Michelin CrossClimate tyres, unfortunately they were the wrong tyre size to fit the MG, but cost £299 for the set!).

Tyres removed (and up for sale!), I then got some Nexen N'Fera SU1 tyres (good reviews, and quite competitively priced) in a 235/45R18 size. This is a bit taller than the standard tyre (closer in diameter to the 215/55R17 which MG now fit on the ZS EV in India), giving 11mm additional ride height.

I think that they fill the arches better than the original wheel and tyre combination, and make the car look a bit better in terms of stance.

These 18" wheels would fit on the MG5. Overall, the 205/60R16 as fitted to the MG5 is same diameter as the 215/50R17 on the ZS.

I did test fit these wheels (with the original 235/55R18 SUV tyres they came with) to the MG5, but the high profile tyres made it look a bit silly...

These will have around 3% difference in the Speedo reading.

That looks really nice! I'd better not let the wife see this post as she'll want me to buy those wheels for her!

Also, liking the tinted glass - I'll see how we get on during this summer but very likely something I'd like done just to give the car a bit more of an 'aggressive' look overall!

Ironically @MilesperkWh I binned off the 17” version of those Nexens as they came factory fit on my Soul EV for a set of CrossClimates ? I now have zero chirp from the wheels when passive aggressively pulling away from junctions (although in general the Kia is less prone to that anyway than the ZS as they have dulled initial torque available from standstill)

The tints make a massive difference to how hot it gets, without them (the driver and passenger side are done to legal limit) it can be a bit like being in a greenhouse once the sun comes out to play

Yeah, I definitely recommend the tints. Go as dark as you like behind the B Pillar. Fronts need to allow 75% light transmission.

Only driven 25 miles with them on. No perceptible difference in range. 3.5m/kWh

The ZS EV would be a more attractive / easier sale if it had 18” as standard from the factory in my opinion.
Or even an option to upgrade to 18” would be nice.
A lot of people don’t really dislike the style of the windmill design, but the car does look a bit “Under Wheeled” on the 17” rims when new.
Once the suspension has had time to settle a bit ( about 12 months ) the car does look a little more in proportion to the choice of wheel size ....... ish !.
It looks better on 18” that’s a fact !.
I would think that dropping the tyre profile down to 45 from 50 has not made much difference to the ride ?.
What about the road noise in the cabin @MilesperkWh has it increased any ?.

Pretty much. As long as they are 5x112 (earlier VW are 5x100 or 4x100)

The car looks good and the wheels are a great choice. TBH any wheels would look better that those horrible windmills, don't know anyone that actually likes them except maybe some MG nerds.
Anyway looks okay and keeps the boy racer happy

All you do by changing your wheels is whilst making it look better add more premiums your insurance by undertaking another modification.
