VED Levy WTF!!

Last night I settled down to a little bedtime reading which ended in a sleepless night. I don't know if any are aware of the new VED proposals but I saw on the net there's going to be a standard charge from April 1st 2025 (presumably for us April fools) for ALL fully electric cars of £190 after the first year. So what's happened to the suggestion it would be based on mileage, with the RAC and AA saying a threshold of around 3500 - 5000 miles being likely. By my reckoning if this comes to pass, around 75% of those considering going EV would be sticking with their ICE cars. Not to mention the effect on the EV industry investing millions on R&D and production costs, surely the whole idea will be a complete disaster, the whole concept of the switch to EV will be dead in the water. The only hope is a Nation wide petition I guess.
On a lighter note, I've been asked about the vibration issue, very interestingly I noticed it within minutes of a trip up the A3 at around 70mph in the Demo car, on our return the Salesman said he thought it was a balance problem between the two motors that MG were aware of and there has been a software update which all the most recent cars should have. It did not bother me on the test run, just felt like I was on a slightly rougher surface. It certainly didn't stop me putting a deposit on the car in the showroom asap! Maybe he was right because my new car has no vibes, but I do get the very very best vibe every time behind the wheel!

Wait until you find out an electric Astra is going to incur the expensive car supplement for VED adding £300 or more to the VED for years 2 to 6 of ownership (expect to see lots of manufacturer offers in 2025 giving £1,500-ish discounts to cover these costs)

You maybe right but they're struggling to move EVs right now because most cannot afford them and to those folks the free VED is some sort of incentive, don't forget that right now you can tax an Alfa Giulietta with 170 bhp for 30 quid and stay on Dino juice. I'm sorry but the only fair way is on mileage, you use the roads more you pay more, imagine the outcry if everyone on the street was forced to pay the same electricity bill irrespective of use - I don't think so. Anybody any ideas what's in the pipeline tax wise for EVs in Europe?

Delay paying £190 car tax on EV until April 2026 (action needed before the end of March 2025)

Hi, in April 2025, EV cars switch from £0 per year car tax to £190. If your car is registered in March, you'll avoid paying it next year. But if registered in April, May or after, you just miss the cut-off and will pay £190 on renewal next year. This method delays it for a year to March 2026...

No plans for any type of 'VED' or road tax for EVs here in Cyprus. I also managed to secure a €9,000 government grant towards the Xpower that I ordered, due for delivery in October/November 2024. Lots of incentives here right now and looks like they will continue for the foreseeable.

I'm a member of another forum, Boxa.net, and can say that around 2005 the tax on Boxsters changed to a higher rate of an additional couple of hundred quid.

The lower rated cars are more desirable and it forms part of the sales blurb so an extra couple of hundred quid factor's in more that you'd think, seen it happen.

Fair enough, but still find it odd, your quite willing to spend circa 30 grand, but are fannying about over a couple of hundred quid. ???

LoL, to be fair I didn't say it made sense, Man maths can be a fickle mistress.

2005 Boxsters are sub £10k now.

Personally I've never really begrudged paying for insurance but I detest paying for RFL for some reason and that's before you factor in the gets increase it every year while the roads get worse.

Ok I think it's all about perspectives here and I don't think we are unique across the UK. My Wife and I are both ( well worn ) seniors on state pension, being an ex road racer makes the Xpower the perfect EV for us with serenity and effortless power, we don't many miles, around two to three thou a year. If my dear Mum in law hadn't gifted us most of the deposit we'd never afford such a car, the insurance is double that of my worn out Fiat Stilo Abarth for which the PX was 600 quid. So for us the free VED was a major consideration and we are unanamus in this!

Your damn right there, my dear Wife Carolyn wasn't going to let me leave the showroom without leaving a deposit on that gleaming White beauty that now resides in the garage. But we were relying on the general consensus that it was going to be mileage related and like everyone else would not mind if it actually went on the roads and fixed those bloody pot holes!

I know Governments are slow to react but a quick Google produced this;

Pretty sure this uses RFL and Tax relating to motor vehicles and it was posted after 20:00.

VED isn't even mentioned.

That's just typically poorly worded .gov.uk web pages ... there is no road fund licence in the UK - AT ALL! At least not in respect of consumers licensing their vehicles - VAT disbursement has nothing to do with VED and consumers.

How come when you search for RFL you get hundreds of hits, seems strange as you would have thought after EIGHTY SEVEN YEARS the term would be meaningless.
