Space-saver spare wheel queries ...

I got this , fits perfectly. The jack fits well in the space vacated by removing the pump and gunk. 16″ SPACE SAVER SPARE WHEEL + TOOL KIT FITS MG ZS EV ELECTRIC (2017-PRESENT DAY) | eBay

I also got a cheap cover for the wheel.
I was on the point of ordering one of these, but took another brief look at their specific 17" spare for the MG4 (for which they charge an extra £30) just to see if there were anything obviously different apart from rim size (all being OK to sub for 18" rims). The only thing that did stick out was this 'new' notice on the MG4 specific wheel page:
"NEW ...
DUE TO THE LARGER FRONT BRAKES CALLIPERS THIS SPARE WHEEL WILL FIT ONLY THE REAR"

Has anyone come across this rather self-defeating issue? (It's not mentioned for the 16" ZS EV wheel - but then perhaps they have different-sized front calipers to the MG4?)

AN UPDATE … which may perhaps assist others:

After all the debate about fitting sizes and possible calliper issues, I decided to follow the predominant advice and ordered from the Wheel Shop their 16” ‘ZS EV’ space-saver, plus brace etc. (which was indeed listed as fitting ZS 16”, 17” and 18” factory wheels). Excellent service, as they delivered next day.

But regrettably, IT DOES NOT FIT my late 2023 Trophy Extended Range – either on the front or rear. To the credit of the Wheel Shop, I phoned next morning and they organised a replacement with their spare designated for MG4 17” or !8” factory wheels – and this also arrived next day with collection at the same time (needed as we’re off to SW France on Tuesday). This is first class service – albeit rather a costly £55 extra exercise, as the MG4 wheel is £30 more than the ZS one and next day swap-over/collection a further £25. Caveat emptor, I guess!

I don’t think the fitting problem is particularly to do with just larger front callipers (on the ER at least – I don’t know about the X-Power with its flashy covers), but is entirely due to the size of all four discs + callipers. I think the discs seem to be the same size front and rear (I ran out of oomph to check the front for a second time!) But measuring as well as I could, the rear discs are about 34.5 cms diameter and need around 40 cms clearance for the callipers) the front disc measured through the wheel spokes seemed identical – but I can’t be 100% sure of this – or the calliper size. I note that the 16” ZS wheel fitted some MG4 LRs, so perhaps they deemed bigger discs were necessary for the ER's larger battery/perfomance? The ZS wheel seemed about an inch too small.

If of interest the wheel that is listed for, and does fit, my MG4 ER is at: 17" Volkswagen Golf | Space Saver Wheel | The Wheel Shop (and also on their eBay shop). This still states that it won’t fit the MG4 front due to calliper size – but, from my unscientific measuring, I think (and hope) it might also fit the front on the MG4 ER – but possibly not the X-Power? Otherwise, a front puncture will need two wheel changes (spare to rear, then rear to front – not welcome at my age!)

Oh, and I bought a cheap (£5) cover too. But I should have got a tougher one as it started to tear at the handle as soon as I tried lifting it!

I hope this helps a little.

Ok , this is now solved . I have been in touch with The Wheel Shop and after some debate they sent me a replacement 18" space saver meant for an Audi . This fits front or back with loads of clearance around the calipers. Here is a picture of the spec on the wheel.

Hi,
Have you got any more specific references for the actual 18-inch Audi wheel that TheWheelShop eventually supplied- I can't work out which it is from the picture you posted. I've just been through the exact same saga for my brand new MG4 Trophy ER . WheelShop specified the 17 inch VW wheel, sent it, but when I fitted it, it fouls the caliper even on the rear! I've emailed them again mentioning that folk have used an 18-inch Audi wheel but thought I'd try to 'help them out'!
Thanks
DLW

Call them or e mail and ask them about the wheel they supplied to me . The guy to speak to is Michael , my name is Andy Lancett. Hopefully he will remember me.

I don't understand this at all (ref my post # 24 above). The replacement VW wheel - link via the post - that they supplied (second time around) was what they recommended. I have tried it and fitted it perfectly happily to my ER on my front drive - and it is fine. I believe too that there are several other posts to that effect on the forum. Does the VW wheel they sent match that in my (their!) link?

Another question after the revival of this thread! I have an MG4 SE from 2022 and was hoping to use my old MG ZS EV spacesaver as referred to in the thread (post #8 and the linked youtube video). I haven't got round to getting the jack and wheel brace out yet to check!

Are there differences between my model and the later Trophy models: I have 215/50 R17s ?

The answer is to trial fit it . If it fits the front it will fit the back as the caliper is bigger on the front. Only takes 10 minutes.

This is the link they specified for me - but I tried it on the front and it wouldn't even fit. On the rear it goes on but is so tight to the caliper that it actually scratches the paint on the wheel!

The 2024 Trophy Extended Range MG4 has got 18-inch wheels which I believe is a new thing for MG and is what has caused all the issues - the discs all-round are huge and the front caliper is pretty large (albeit not as large as the ones on the X-power.) I stupidly just trusted The WheelShop to get it right even though I had seen Andy's post about sorting it with an 18-inch Audi wheel.

It is certainly a bit strange - I wonder if something has recently changed in respect of the Trophy ER discs or callipers. Have you checked if there is clearance on the rear? I got the wheel on but it was very tight and the corner of the calliper was touching the inside of the wheel - actually put a scratch in the black paint!

The Audi wheel I got from the wheel shop had so much clearance that I wouldn't be surprised if it went on an X Power.

More clearance than even than the actual factory-fitted wheels! I can only just get a flat finger between the calliper and the inside of the fitted alloy on the front and rear wheels! At least I'm getting expert at removing the aero covers and getting the wheels on and off!

Yeah that Audi space saver has loads of clearance.

Hopefully the final word on this. First of all many thanks for your input. I contacted The Wheel Shop yesterday and have received this reply which suggests they now understand they have an incorrect catalogue detail, at least for the MG4 Trophy ER. Hopefully, the 18-inch wheel they are supplying will do the job just as you described! To anyone else with a 24 plate MG4 Trophy ER with 18-inch wheels, if you have bought the 17 inch suggest you double-check it fits or get it swapped.
Please accept our apologies for this inconvenience
We are in the process of changing the listing from 17" to 18"

We can exchange the wheel for you for the 18" one

Really useful forum by the way folks, look forward to future input.

So have I got this right as a summary of this thread:

SE and Original Trophy models:
Certain 17" VW Golf (and MG ZS EV) spacesaver wheels will fit front and back.

XPower and Trophy ER models:
The above won't fit due to the size of the brakes so an Audi 18" spacesaver is necessary.

Not quite. The 17" may not fit the front due to the larger caliper. I had to get the 18" Audi wheel for my early LR Trophy to fit front and back.
