No MG content, but we know because we own Chinese cars, that the Chinese are definitely coming...

Low-cost, high-tech Chinese EVs have stirred fears of a government subsidized existential threat to automakers around the world. So what do these vehicles have to offer? How do they compare to the Tesla Model Y, which in 2024 was the best-selling car in the world? CNBC’s Beijing bureau chief Eunice Yoon tested four of them from large and high-profile Chinese brands to see how they stack up, and how their rivals might compete.

In answer to the thread question; it depends if they keep Musk as the CEO. He's become a bit toxic to the company lately.
I really don't think it will make a jot of difference who is CEO. There are many more factors about the actual cars that will make a difference, and they are still very very popular.

I was entertaining the thought of buying one till Musk changed Twitter. Neither me or my wife would buy a Tesla now.

I appreciate the sentiment behind it. I also very much disagree on some of the things Elon Musk is publicly doing or declaring.
And it’s very true that owning a Tesla can be perceived by the general public as an endorsement of the actions of its current CEO.
If an en-mass boycott of Tesla was to take place, what could be the result? I don’t have a crystal ball but I wonder if there have been other cases in the past of similar companies with similar CEO’s.

I personally would right now still buy a Tesla because I know that, despite the questionable actions by Elon Musk, or indeed some of his wrong doings, the car company is overall a force for good in the market.

Not just twitter though. The Tesla board must be thinking he's a liability now.
He’s also capable of standing against a board that at times has not been able to make good decisions.

What Elon Musk needs is an AI to vet his actions before they become reality. Something like a counsellor. I’m serious: he has traits of someone with autism and ADHD combined. This can have huge consequences if not taken seriously

So you wouldn't buy a Tesla because Musk changed Twitter. I don't know what you drive as it's not on your profile, but being on this forum suggests you still have an interest in cars made by a company belonging to the Chinese State government that has done far worse things than Elon Musk could even imagine.
It's nice to have principles.

Exactly, this whole forum is dedicated to a Chinese car! Musk does say some stupid things, and even admits it, but Twitter is being revamped to be a decent platform, although AI needs to tag / warn on undesirable content and block illegal content, with the EU on their case. Community Notes helps pick up inaccurate content. Twitter is the #1 news App in the App Store.

Twitter has just locked me out for maybe not being human, and now isn't reinstating me even after I passed the bloody Turing Test they set. So there's that. But I do appreciate Musk having sacked most of the moderators who were insta-banning people with no appeal because they said something the mod thought wasn't politically correct.

I think Tesla will still make cars, but I think they will have to head down the HEV route to stay in business, in the UK so many houses cannot charge a car at home, regardless of what they have on the roof, charging stations are no good unless you're travelling and really need to use them.

HEV seems the best option until the world's governments see that Hydrogen is the fuel of the future, preferable in an ICE car, not a fuel cell.

Hydrogen has ZERO future in cars! It’s complex, expensive with no refuelling infrastructure. it’s a possible stationary storage product, but that’s it. Some manufacturers like Toyota sing its praises, because they are nowhere in EVs. EVs are the simplest technology which is getting better all the time along with huge battery energy density improvements (within 2-3 years) that will even support electric planes within a decade or so. HEV will never happen.

Is this some sort of complicated performance art?

We will all have different views on Hydrogen powered vehicles, but I've been watching it since the EV cars started in the UK, some companies not related to cars have and are still investing heavily into it, I'll be 6 foot under perhaps before the world catches on but it will come if only because of it's abundance, just think the exhaust is water, where do they get the Hydrogen from? The issues are transport & storage the engines already exist and need only a few mods.

Greater minds than ours.

A lot depends where the hydrogen comes from, At the moment it mainly comes from fossil fueled powered electricity.

Yes Andrew Forrest is pushing green hydrogen, and converting it to ammonia for easy storage. But he's mainly interested in iron ore production.
Anything is possible these days, I guess market forces will make the final decision.

Robert Llewellyn interviewed a physics professor a couple of years ago on Fully Charged, and he gave very good, practical reasons why hydrogen is a bad idea and will only ever be a niche market.

The oil industry is promoting it as an answer to all our worries because they want to carry on drilling for fossil fuels when we all stop buying petrol and deisel.
