OPD, car rolls backwards when stopping on downhill slopes (merged thread)

There are youtube videos showing it. But my impression from the posts is that MG denies it is a problem...

Hey quick question. Quick question about potential One Pedal Driving Mode Issues

Aussie here with a MG4 Essence 64 model. Very happy with it so far even though it’s a less than perfect car (which is fine).

So I’ve been playing with the features and spent a week using the One Petal Driving Function and whilst perfectly fine most of the time but I have noticed that car has on a handful occasions decided to roll physically backwards (proximity 1 metre) on steep downward facing slopes without my prompting.

Can anyone explain this?
I’m a little worried that the car might decide to just do this and smash in another car directly behind me

I drove several cars using OPD and none of them had this. But then again, maybe the hills weren't steep enough?

I'd be careful what you wish for. MG may tackle the problem simply by significantly reducing the regen level when in OPD mode.

From the way I see other people come to a halt behind other cars, I'm not sure I've seen any instances where reversing a metre would have caused a collision, and as your foot is always just above one of the pedals anyway you tend tend to stop the car going backwards very quickly.

I think pedestrians are more of a problem though. They (myself included) have been known to cross behind vehicles almost the instant the vehicle has passed.
 
Well anything really! I’m curious if the car decides to do this little trick will the rear traffic detection system kick in and stop the car before it collides? 🤔
I find the rear cross traffic alert hyper sensitive. When I reverse park at work, and the car sees a car on the road a good 6 metres behind me (with a fence and a bus stop between me and the traffic) it slams on the brakes like we're mere millimetres apart.. Thankfully I'm normally able to park at a different car park so I don't have to deal with this daily.

Mine doesn't slam on the brakes but I think I've changed the setting to alert only. I'll have a look in a bit.
 
MG New Zealand have had my MG 4 for over a week on the pretext that it was only my vehicle thats affected. Clearly that's a lie. They've also claimed that this is designed behaviour in order to discharge excess regen power. Also bullshit. The bottom line is that this is a dangerous, undocumented "feature" (i.e. hazardous design flaw). I'm considering progressing with a class action lawsuit against MG as the vehicles should never have been allowed on sale. What kind of "feature" slams the car into reverse because you touch the brakes??!!! Anybody else keen to join in the litigation?
@Gruntbuggly this just happened to us on the weekend with our brand new MG HS + EV.
Within two days of ownership the vehicle shifted into reverse on three separate occasions while in Drive. Each time, the only way to correct the issue was to turn the car off and restart it. This issue was witnessed by my passenger and discussed in real time.

On Sunday night my husband was driving the car when it happened again. However this time the vehicle reversed suddenly with force, narrowly missing our child who was walking behind the car. The car then collided with our house

A brief search online indicates other owners of this car who have had similar incidents. So far, I have the names of 20 Australians who have commented on two MG Facebook pages, about this happening to them.

This is an extremely dangerous defect that could have resulted in serious injury or worse. Given the severity of the issue, I have requested the ACCC to investigate immediately.
