ZS Hybrid+ Trophy
Hi,

I got an MG ZS hybrid for a week now. Positives: feels good on the street, feels safe and big, nice to sit in. Negatives: white seats already have some black color in it, then there is a Big "problem": maybe it is not a problem maybe this how the hybrid system works, but this problem really sucks, that the engine revs so high on the slightest hill and really struggles to accelerate on steep hills. I hope I can hear from you if this is a problem in my car or it is just how the system is built ?

This is a well known and well discussed issue. There is a firmware update that is supposed to fix it (PD052, search for it), but you won't get it unless you pester for it, or have the car serviced. The UK is a bit behind Europe on getting the update; I have no idea where Israel in this respect.

[Edit: Mentioned "PD052", "supposed to fix it" ]

There are a few other posts relating to the level of regeneration being connected to the high revs and dangerous performance on hills problem.
I’m certain that ‘regeneration’ has nothing to do with the high revs and dangerous performance problem.
When you lift your foot off the accelerator, the amount of power used to recharge the traction battery is set depending on the setting selected 1,2, or 3.
Dealer, wool over eyes, appears to be a possibility.

Turn Air Con try the difference it's stealing power from engine.

PD052 is available for the problem that you speak about.Your dealership may claim no knowledge of this ,but you need to insist on the update, get them to contact MG UK.Car is great to drive when engine heats up and you will enjoy EV mode more often ,even with ACC on.

We have the same problem with reving to extreme levels, took the car back to the dealer, and they said it was ok 🙄

OK it's not easy but here are some Hybrid MG zs + tips. I have worked to find them and....am not a first time Hybrid driver. I bought this car because I needed a bigge
Car from the little but great Yaris, had it 3yrs from new. However the MG ZS+ offered me more at about the same money. Look at what you get, Wow!
Then I wasn't getting Hybrid mode out of but wow the same 1.5l engine is running a bigger car with all those extras and bigger poke. The Yaris screamed at me if I pushed it too far too. The Hybrid engines are different and Toyota has 30yrs more experience in this regard but I needed what I have. Yes it's disappointing at first but it's extraordinarily cold out there. That affects both. Batteries don't like cold so keep your power tool batteries inside too. I have had going uphill 74mpg for a short time with Air Con off and driving like a dawdling person. I have experienced to my then horror the 3 gear box screaming at me but only when the Hybrid battery was low. It works in line with the petrol engine not in parallel (I think?) Now I am experimenting on the same journeys. 47mpg with heating on and 68.9mpg with it off but electric seats not affected. Heating runs off the engine, hence stealing your mpg and revving occurs trying to give you power and fans and heat. Also it has only 3 gears.....!
Regen and modes? I am not sure as yet where the difference lies but on a straight road steady speed play with it. Sport steals the power from Air Con? Certainly if you ask for too much cabin heat before your temperature gauge has got at least three bars you are asking too much of this big cabin car that has many driving benefits.
I am writing this late at night but hope it makes some sense. Hybrid driving is different as is Electric, only just watch the electric ones that dawdle because they don't have the journey's expected range and then those that zip like a rocket because they are only popping out for something. This car has benefits and boy some good ones. Taken me a while to fit in with it and with the Yaris too. I am getting there though. Enjoy...

I jokingly feel like doing a thesis on this car. Growing to love it. It beats anything in its price bracket. So much kit. Driving it differently to Toyota Hybrid. Its a learning curve in any hybrid. Watch this space.

I have the Trophy its worth it to me for the extras.

Have to agree with the above comments it is a great car and once you get used to the driving characteristics of this vehicle it is a pleasure to drive had mine coming up 4 months and not experienced any of the issues other people seem to be having drive mostly in normal regen 3 only use sport when needs be for overtaking or to pull away quickly. Mine the trophy model very happy with the specification I got a good discount on this car and for the price there was no competition did like the new dacia duster but think that they starting to outprice themselves from their competitors.

Yeah the regen and modes are my next experimentation. If I am hitting a motorway I start off in Sport and regen 3. Drop to Normal but at motorway speeds I keep regen 3 on. If going downhill on steeper country roads I use regen 1 to coast and fill the battery.
Regen 3 for speeds and lifting foot off pedal can handle that at speeds. Normal and 2 mostly. Only in eco if battery full and tottering off to shops.
Yep getting it (I think). Love the extras that money can't buy at similar price. Loved Toyota Hybrid but this is a different horse riding experience.

And........it's B#@*dy cold out there. So I am becoming more frugal with Air Con even warming seats and steering ( which I have grown to Love) wheel. Open window an inch to demist. If you are warm through electric heating turn off AC until you need it or have at least 3xbars on temp gauge and see how the mpg jumps. If revs become audible it's just the engine on its own as hybrid battery needs juice so hit it even further.

I think that you will see even more benefits off the car come the summer months I to like the heated seat and wheel on a cold morning my daily commute to work is 10 mile either way and once warmed up do quite a proportion in ev.

I warmed the car up 8 mins before setting off today as i had a passenger to consider and then killed the AC on departure. Great results. Wondering how Air Con in hot summer months cooling down the cabin will affect the mpg. Expecting to drive from Bilbao to Cherbourg and back to Co Antrim.

I smart app another great feature, this car is a learning experience for myself as I have never had a hybrid but so far so good and really enjoying the benefits.

Sadly, it seems to be the case. I have taken my new zs trophy back twice for overreving engine, but they advised me it's normal. I just turn the music up a bit and enjoy the rest rest of the driving experience.

Have you found the button for folding mirrors in while car is running? Useful this a.m as bins needed wheeling out if drive and London in urban areas.
Yes, it's the mirror toggle for adjusting the side mirrors, press up or down. However, once you start to drive the mirrors will come back out!!

It is not a feature of the car.The dealership knows about the software update for this issue,PD052.
