Had the car three months now and still unsure if I have an issue with brakes, everything works fine but the noise when braking appears strange. I reminds me of older cars ( from a distant time) when discs / brake shoes needed changing, a sort of metal to metal sound. Is this peculier to electric cars?

Hi

Do you use regen a lot? If so your discs can become pitted/corroded due to the little amount if use they get. Try a few journeys without using KERS and see if it cures itself.

I had my year 1 service and corrosion on the disks was picked up so now I use the breaks a little more often but still regen.

Try doing a couple of trips in sport or normal mode, that will make you use the brakes more and polish off any corrosion on the discs. Alternatively, someone posted on here about a product you can safely spray on your brakes discs to inhibit corrosion - I forget the name of the poster/product though so that's not entirely helpful!

I didn't find much difference in Eco or Normal, in fact preferred driving in Normal after a having the car for a while.
Big difference in use of brakes is in regen level, use level 1 around town and you will soon 'brake off' any rust etc..

Yep - The normal type of "Scrapping Sound" when applying the foot brake for the first time after the car has been sitting over night in wet damp weather conditions.
Common noise heard on EV's !.
Surface rust being allowed to form, on the braking surface face of the steel brake disc's.
Mainly due to EV's using strong levels of "Regen" braking and therefore lack of use of the friction brakes, as is normal in a ICE car.
Try reducing your Regen braking level down to the minimum setting, about once a week.
This will necessitate the use of MORE footbrake use and will therefore help keep the surfaces of the brake disc's free from any surface rust forming.

IIRC regen only works above a certain speed (5 or 7 mph ?) so reversing off my drive every morning, with the brake slightly pressed, at about 2 mph cleans any light surface rust off the discs and prevents it building up.
Most cars will suffer from light rusting if not used for a couple of days, especially when the weather is wet and windy. It's just that, as EVs are so quiet, it's easier to hear this scraping sound than in an ICE with the engine running on fast idle first thing.

That sounds like atom Mac which you can spray on to stop rust on brakes.

I had this and rang the dealer and was told, it's a known issue, just bring it in and they will clean the breaks and apply a treatment.

Did so, now no problem, apparently it's a coating not removed in manufacturing.

Here is what the New South Wales Minister for the Environment, Mr. Stokes, says about EV brakes:

Mr Stokes said electric vehicles were heavy and “torque-y” and created a lot of wear and tear on roads. He also said the weight contributed to the amount of particulate matter they expelled.
“Because EVs are so heavy, those particulates from brakes and tyres can actually be more significant than from existing petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles,” he said.

I guess he has shares in major coal mining companies too....?

See he doesn't mention the additional emissions such as CO2, NOx or Diesel particulates from ICE vehicles. ?

What a T*t !.

What twaddle!!!
Can’t really say that’s a particularly useful or entirely correct piece of information coming from a state minister, considering present state of vehicles on Australia’s roads…?
Australia’s top 10 best selling cars(no particular order) and GVM weights
Ford Ranger - 2220 kgs
Toyota Hilux - 2700-2980 kgs
Toyota Rav 4 - 2020-2215
Nissan Navara - 3000-3200kgs
Mitsubishi Outlander - 2240 -2350kgs
Hyundai Tucson - 2030-2315 kgs
Mitsubishi ASX - 1970kgs
Hyundai i30 1820-1880
Toyota corolla 1820-1845
MG ZS - 1290kgs

MGZSEV - about 1590kgs!! ?

Do these idiots in the Australian administration ever get challenged on these type of remarks? It's like he has a mental illness or something, or has been bribed to say this type of utter shite (actually that's probably more likely). I don't use social media, but I wish I used Twitter just to call this prick out...

Edit: I posted in this thread earlier about a product to stop corrosion on brakes but couldn't remember it. I've found it, courtesy of a post by @Aussi55 - Bilt Hamber Atom Mac Migratory Contact Corrosion Inhibitor 500ml (New Larger Bottle).

A correction is possibly needed - Stokes is currently the Minister for Infrastructure, Cities and Active Transport ?. As the local member for one of the most beautiful areas of Sydney (northern Beaches), he’s trying to convince his electorate of the advantages of a massive multi-billion $ road Tunnel through environmentally sensitive areas in order to solve current multiple bottlenecks. Possibly political suicide but who knows. He was briefly Environment Minister in 2014/15.
They come and they go…usually to highly paid board positions post-elections!?.
