MG5 Confused over update versions

Hi and welcome to the forum,
There are a number of units that run different software and most you can't access versions.
The Tesla Supercharger is an important one but you can see if it works by trying it on a Tesla charger.

I couldn't get much info from the salesman about software updates other than him saying it was updated in the pre-delivery inspection. On the screen it says MPU software version SW183-29867-1300R12 and MCU software version 83.3.4.8
Is the R12 the sofware revision? If so, what is the latest?

I don't know exactly where you are in Wiltshire but there is an open Tesla supercharger at Amesbury or a few around Bristol. Get yourself set up on the Tesla app, add a payment method to it and try to charge your car. If the car comes up with an error about the grid being unsuitable then the car needs the Tesla update. The dealer will probably see it as as the CCU update. Unfortunately owners can't check any of the updates themselves, the only things we can see are the versions numbers of the infotainment system, which isn't so useful.

For the avoidance of doubt, it has to be a 'Tesla Public Supercharger'. Their locations will obviously be available in the Tesla app, but if you have Zapmap (and probably be available in other similar apps) you can get the locations of these Tesla Public Superchargers by choosing the filter (the icon next to the Search icon) for that charger network under Network.

I went to two Tesla supercharging locations in Bristol today. Both were on the list as 'open'. The first came up with an error saying something like the was was not authorised. A charger at the second location did not give this error message and it did appear to communicate with the car - but it didn't charge it. If you have been able to get your MG5 to work on a Tesla charger, exactly what did you do (and in what order) and what happened? Many thanks

You tell the app which charger you are going to use and plug the charger in. Everything else generally happens automatically. Sometimes it helps to lock the car - this locks the cable into the car socket. What did the car say about the charging status? Mine used to say something about incompatible/unreliable grid until I had the update done.

Mine came up with "not authorised" when I tried to charge at Lifton 'open' Tesla, despite sales team saying PDI will check all the updates.
When I bought it I said it was a condition of the purchase that I could charge at Tesla (I travel from Bath to mid-Cornwall a couple of times a month) so went back with "fix it or have the car back".

1/2 hour in the workshop for update/fix and it now charges at the Bristol Eastgate Eastville Tesla.

As above downloaded Tesla app, added a debit/credit card. As mentioned before because you haven't got a Tesla to add to the app, it will only show open chargers.

Rock up to charger, move car a bit closer as cables quite short/but not too close that I actually hit unit and get 400V?/250 kW buzzing through me and the car (although probably less hurty than the glares you'll get from some Tesla owners)...

Plug cable in, lock car, find charger number, select it on app, find something to do for 20-30 mins. I see Kevin selects charger in App before plugging in so looks like works both ways.

When charged end charge either via MG app or Tesla App, unlock, disconnect and drive off so as not to be hit by idle fees of £1 per minute! (from T&Cs - if the car is moved within 5 minutes the charge is waived and are only applied if charging station is at 50% capacity or more. Doubled if at 100% capacity).

Screen shot from Thursday, only 7.5 kWh in 28 minutes. The car had only driven about a mile so both the battery and air temp were quite cold, added to being at approx 80%. It went to 96% so think it maxed out at 16.95kW and was trickle charging at 13.4 kW by 92%

Just had a thought, I tried to charge at Tesla SC Banbury and had a not authorised message. I had previously charged on Tesla without problems elsewhere. Suddenly realised I had forgotten to add money to my 'spending' cashback card and it was failing because of the pre-auth fee being refused insufficient funds.
Schoolboy error and I made 3 attempts before I twigged. No doubt not your problem here but something to be aware of.

@JonPants - Looking at your location, did you buy from Bath MG? Picking mine up from there next week under assurances that software updates (and Tesla one in particular) will done under PDI…

No mine was from a little further North, as at the time Bath were a little more expensive and I was working nearby.
Although trip back to get software sorted probably eat into the difference .
Good that you also got a guarantee that the Tesla fix will be done, just in case. I guess it costs them nothing more than the 5 minutes it takes to plug it and start the update running.

You made it a condition of sale that it be able to Supercharge, yet they did'nt break the golden rule of "never firmware update at pre-delivery". Maybe they learned something from this, but I have my doubts. Amazing.

I suggest that you relate this story to them, and make it clear that you expect them to do better than the other dealership.

I suspect that's the best case, but also largely the common case. They probably remember "that time" when the servers were down or there was an internet apocalypse, and it took them two hours to do one update. And ever after they prefer the nice and easy oil changes to those infernal updates.

Hopefully one day they'll realise that actually the updates aren't that bad, and you don't even get your hands dirty.

They'll never realise that! The dealership model works on maximum profit at all times. The owner doesn't care a jot about whether the underpaid technician gets dirty or not, or enjoys the work they're doing or not for that matter. It is solely about how much bottom line profit they can wring out of every interaction with a customer. On the rare occasion when the interaction doesn't involve making a profit, time spent on it must be absolutely minimised to as little as possible!

I may be slightly cynical, but I am correct.

Is the Banbury SC open now? It wasn't an open one when I last looked.
Later...... I must be getting old - I have actually charged there in the past but had forgotten it.

12 x 250kW chargers at Lockheed Close Banbury United Kingdom OX16 1LX are showing on the app for us peasants.

Bristol St assured me that the update had been done for my new (1month old) FL MG5 before delivery. So today I tried charging it at Sindlesham which is a Tesla Public supercharger site. I had a payment method etc set up in the Tesla app.

So the first problem was what do I plug in? There were two cables so I chose the one with the DC underneath (- aren't their cables short!!) - but the attached AC bit doesn't have as many pins as there are on my usual cable. However I assume this was the right one?

I went through the process in the app of telling it which charger and starting charge but the car but it never started to charge. The dash showed it as connected but had Charge Cease on the screen, which I can't find described anywhere.

Does that mean it has had the update or is hasn't?

If it has, what was I likely doing wrong?

You picked the right cable - most of the AC pins don't do anything while DC charging.
Yes, the cables are very short. Every Tesla has the socket in the same place so the cable only needed to be long enough to reach that point. You'll get the hang of exactly where to put the car, as far to the right as you can but not quite level with the charger.
What did the car say about the charging status? Mine said something like "Incompatible grid" before I had the update done.
Did you actually get to the part where you tell the Tesla app which charger you are using? It might be worth locking the car to get the socket to lock.
