Ice Inside Car - How to Reduce Condensation

The hard frost overnight left ice on both sides of the windscreen. This follows a lot of condensation in the car during the colder months.

I have not used air condtioning during this time? Would AC help?

Any other suggestions?

I have been removing the cloth used to wipe the inside windows to the house for drying. And we mostly use replenished rather than recycled air.

I park on a drive that gets limited sunlight. The road doesn't lend itself to safe street parking. Garage is too full of other stuff for parking there.

Another factor might be our low milage during colder weather. But two days ago we did about 30 miles with the heating on 23C.
 
Yes a short blast with ac will help , also make sure it’s on the demist and feet setting , that seems to work best in my 5
Any car will have ice inside at these cold temps we had last night ,
I own a Ford Cmax as well and I just start that and leave the heated front screen on for a bit
 
I'm still also grappling with this conundrum myself.

My understanding is EVs are more prone to this issue that ICEs in general because they produce much less heat. However other EVs in my household (Ionic 6 and eGolf) don't pose it nearly to the extent of my 2023 MG5.

I haven't had an instance of massive condensation like you're describing where it's iced over entirely. or even a really wet condensation - mostly it's just a light foggy condensation that's hard to shift.

Airflow and removing moisture from the car is the solution - Air Conditioning will remove moisture while you're driving, I keep mine on all the time. I also try keep recirculation off. By default the car auto-recircs. I usually make sure outside air is coming into the system to try get moisture out (the arrow coming into the car on the symbol). But I don't always remember to set this.

I've also found from other posts on this forum that the front doors have a piece of rigid plastic tape covering the drains. It's still not clear whether these should have been removed by the dealer. I've removed mine to hopefully induce water that gets trapped in the door to find a way out quickly. However no water was inside them when I did. So it's unclear whether this has much impact yet.

I've applied RainX Fog on the inside windscreen, it lasted about 2 weeks before fog started building again - however not nearly as bad. I may do a more intense application to try improve things.

One thing I've not done yet is buy those dehumidifer bags and keep them in the car. I probably will. Others on here have suggested this.

As I said, my issue isn't nearly at the extent of yours. But a lack of airflow from outside, and general water retention are going to be the culprit regardless. I had an old Fiesta that completely moulded because it wasn't driven for a couple months one winter - so if you're not driving option, the problem will likely be exacerbated.
 
A lowish powered fan/heater on an extension cable to the house with either a timer or manual switch has been recommended by some for when you imagine it will be a problem. Remember to take it out before setting off!!!!!!!! or have a Ring doorbell camera and upload to YT.

I've got them.... not much good in the 5 . My MG5 is probably the worst car I've owned for internal condensation . Sometimes I've got more water/ice running down the inside of the screen as outside :) . I still love my 5 though (y)
 
It's an EV problem, many if not all electric cars suffer from it, luckily the heater/demister works pretty quickly.
 
I have not had this problem at all on my FL. I keep AC on all the time and recirculation on "auto" (the one with the A symbol). I normally leave the doors open for a little longer than necessary when I arrive somewhere to let the hot moist air escape before I lock up, but that's a habit I've retained from my old ICE car as opposed to something I've needed with the MG5. I actually love how quickly the windscreen clears with the direct electric heat coming from waiting at least 5 minutes for an ICE engine to heat up!

Also when I remember to do it, it's very convenient turning on defrost on the app from inside the house before I step out, but I know that's only a FL thing.
 
Just leave A/C on all the time; it acts like a dehumidifier
Don’t leave heater on hi until you turn the car off. Try dropping the temperature down on the heater a bit before you turn the car off.
I’ve always used car dehumidifier bags in my cars during winter months.

I've found the following.
Enable the internal circulation button(pre face lift) so it's illuminated, before leaving the car.
This stops a breeze blowing up the vents and freezing the screen.
When in the car, turn off the internal circulation button as this will use the air from outside, less humidity and a quicker screen clear.

The only downside when it's disabled is if you're following a smelly ice car/van/ bike, you will notice the smell quickly.
