Delay paying £190 car tax on EV until April 2026 (action needed before the end of March 2025)

I think this whole topic has become way over complicated. It matters not when your tax is due, and nobody has missed the boat.

All EVers should simply renew it online in March 2025 (with it starting 1st March). That way it’s FOC until 1st March 2026. Then the full standard rate will be charged. Isn’t that true?

Hi, I'm the original poster, no need to thank me haha. I re-taxed the MG4 last March, so due this March, and all ok. That's daved me about £170.

However I also have a PHEV hybrid (Mazda MX30 R-EV) bought in September. The tax was £0. But will be £190 when re-taxed for september 2025.

I tried re-taxing it a few days ago to get the £0 tax for a year, got the usual 're-taxing early means you'll pay again early etc.

BUT it then said the cost to tax it now is £190! So something has changed. Either as it is a PHEV not pure EV? But to re-tax early, I would have to now pay £190 - and that isn't even the rate until April!

Not sure if a 2-day SORN would work better?

Does anyone have any ideas what's happened?

AFAICC Hybrids registered after April 2017 pay the full rate for the second tax payment onwards. Check this page see if you agree?
Cheers. Peter

I believe you're correct about the 2nd tax payment onwards ... but doesn't that only apply on or after 1st April 2025? Or was that rule already in place for hybrids? (For EVs it only applies on or after).

That page is about the current rates as of today. So the way I see it, hybrids made after 2017 only got their first year free (or cheap). Second payment on is standard full rate.

This is the rules page applying from April 2025…..

EVs are a separate case with the Zero cost VED only ending when renewing on/after 1st April 2025

So I still think everyone with an EV should renew online in March?? No matter when it’s due.
Cheers Peter

At the risk of being pedantic, and with greatest respect…… what you did last March hasn’t saved you a penny! It was an unnecessary, but harmless, action (unless it was due then anyway).

You can renew a VED anytime, without waiting for the previous one to expire. As long as you have the registration document (V5C) number.

It’s the renewing it in March 2025 still at zero rate that really saves you some dosh!
Cheers.
Peter

Agreed. I was a year early! As I tried to renew the tax on the hybrid, I thought 'why did I say it had to be done last march'. However, it did set it for life, if I'd forgotten to do it this March it was already on the right cycle.

I do hope everyone resets their tax year in March.

So let me get this straight.
Can we re-tax anytime in March?
🤣😂🤣😂🤪🙂👍
Yes, providing you have the V5C registration document number.
There is nothing to be gained by leaving it later on in March as the new VED will have to start backdated to 1st March anyway, so as to include March.

It’s very important that you don’t book it to start 1st April (for pretty obvious reasons). Peter

I'm sure Salty actually knew the answer this question @prawlin, his reply to Alb was more in the manner of mild sarcasm, however, most of us will be applying in March without the V11 reminder.

I see now, thanks. I see now I actually made an error by referring to the registration document as V11. It’s actually V5C. Sorry about that.

The V11 is the tax reminder which most won’t get before April. So it’s the V5C (registered in your name) that will be needed in order to re tax it online early (before the old one expires) in March.

I’ve edited my posts above to correct it for the record. I reckon a lot of folk will be stumbling on this thread via google search in the next few weeks. That was how I found it and joined the forum in order to contribute. I don’t have an MG, mines an Eniro.
Sorry again anyway.. Peter

Nah, next year, when the VED goes up again, it'll be, "can we tax it in march to still get it at this years rate"
Ah but ah but ah but….. If everyone (EVers) renews it in March this year, then we'll all be renewing in Feb/March next year anyway 😉. Which is actually an additional bonus plus for renewing it this coming March. It means going forward we will always be a full year behind on the inevitable price increases. So it’s a win win 👍Peter.
