Probably won’t get an MG4 again

I would swap this POS for our old ID3 tomorrow if I could

People mention ID software but it was a paragon of virtue compared to the Xpower (R59) and also didn't try to kill me every week!

The dealers are dreadful
Software is far more stable iny VW group car compared to the wife's bag of nails trophy, safety systems are safer and more reliable also

So in your experience, Len, you'd be happy driving a Skoda Enyaq or Elroq?
Enyaq is a big motor wouldn't be my choice although I like the coupe but not the size I need, Elroq looks promising as does the EV 3.
Not heard anything overly bad about the enyaq.

My next car will either be the dual motor ev3 when it's released, alpine A290 another Born and wouldn't rule out the x power if they could make it a bit more premium, sort out the crap software and crap after sales.

Alpine appeals due to size, physical buttons and Renault/Google software

And another nail in the MG coffin, the Driver Alertness System failed (I don't much care for it) but unlike a lot of errors that appear and disappear if you get out, lock it and unlock and get back in again it has remained. Looks like I might finally have the excuse to go to the dealer and complain properly about the Software, the 12V battery is fine by the way and the clamps are tight.

Incidentally today (after the fault not before) as I was running the battery down to below 10% so I could perform a full balance charge I noticed going uphill (batt 13%) the car refused to give full power, fine on the flat but uphill it was having none of it, I'm guessing it didn't have the juice to give it all.

It unfortunately disappoints, faults are not just an MG thing all cars have them. Really crap after sales and dealer services do however for the most part seem to be where MG excel, as proved by the what car reliability survey

Len: The Google software on the Renault Scenic works well too.

Just been reading Renault Scenic EV forums tonight.

Owners have had a few issues charging.
There are fixes for this, but some dealers are not helpful or aware.

So there's more than one motor manufacturer who struggles to relate well with their customers.

The issues with Renault EVs charging related to Zappi chargers, they had to give my energi a Megane so they could work through the issue that in turn created an update that owners of Zappis had to receive to their cars.

The software system in new Renaults are pure Google operating system and is recognised as one of the major pluses of the car, I have an elder relative who has had a Megane EV for over two years and the ota updates have been seamless. This has included system updates, electric motor updates etc

There is crap service and crap dealers with every manufacturer, Renault UK are however very proactive and if contacted will sort out any issues people are experiencing on their behalf.
The other issues are in the motor trade in general there is a distinct lact of awareness amongst sales and servicing around EVs in general. As a collective there will be a a lot more knowledge in forums such as this regarding EVs and members will for the most part be able to run rings round most sales staff.

We plan to keep our MG4 for the long-term.

But we did have a car written off once and had to scramble to find a new one.

If that happened to our MG4 then we'd look for another MG4, but would consider other options like a Cupra Born (because pebbles likes them), Kia EV3 or R5 if they became more competitive on price.

My MG4 is great but I will probably replace my wife's Skoda with a solid state battery EV once they are mainstream. I want to wait until there is a significant shift in technology before getting her EV and also have about five years between our two cars. Having said that I am watching the EV4 rumours with interest. I just wish Kia used Android Automotive. I want google maps with SoC awareness.

I too am intrigued by this EV4.

I don't see the point in waiting for solid state, though. As long as a car is good enough it will be useful.

The main issue with EVs of whatever battery type is the inadequacy of charging points but hopefully they will continue to be installed at a rapid pace in line with new vehicle registrations.

Interesting thread. Good to have a real world perspective after reading all the glowing "bargain of the century" reviews. Glad I read this as I was about to buy a used MG4. I think I need to do some further research before committing.

Yep, a lot of good EVs out there now. Plenty to choose from. And no doubt some bloody good deals to be had.
Unless you want a rocketship EV then there's only one. Certainly at a price, I'm guessing most folk can afford.
It's a good time for the EV buyer. 🙂👍

While valid opinions, I wouldn't take this thread as indicative as the topic is attracting those who are not happy. The poll shows 77.6% happiness which is probably a fair measure. The MG4 is a great car for the money once the infotainment software is updated and by my measures the LKA software update will remove my last niggle. It's great value if you buy with a decent discount and if it meets your requirements. On the other hand there are alternatives like the EV3 that are worth considering but you won't get them discounted as much.

Research and test drive and find the right answer for you. Having a dealership that you know and trust is useful, even if you didn't buy from them I would get serviced by them.

I have to say there is much that I like about the MG4.

It has great get up and go, handles well and is sure-footed. I find the seats, both front and back, comfortable and leg room great.

We came to the car from a 2009 vehicle, so it is very different, and the touchscreen stuff took a lot of finding our way around. I still haven't managed to connect my phone via Android Auto and even connecting via Bluetooth is hit and miss. Most calls come straight to the phone and only the odd one or two go through to the car.

The gear selector mounting is a pain in the @rse, or should I say knees.

Visibility out the back is awful, but our Trophy has the camera, which helps.

The boot we are disappointed with, at 363 litres, as compared to 439 for our previous jalopy.

The servicing was a bit meh.
Every time I've ever taken a new car back for dealer servicing, the first question I'm asked is "Have you had any issues with the car?"
They never asked that, never offered me a drink and, when the car was ready, tried to get me to pay for it, when it was included in the agreement.

But our biggest issue of all was the driver aids, particularly the lane keep and the unwanted emergency stops.

We have not had any reliability issues, aside from the minor but persistent grumbling from the NSR TPMS sensor at very cold temperatures, complaining that it was under inflated while displaying the same pressure as the other three corners!
Adding a couple of decimal points of bar all round has sorted that.

As I have said before, I'm getting a bit creaky, so want something a bit higher up and easier to get into, and something with a bigger boot would be good too. But we have been a bit spoilt with the Trophy trim, especially the 360 cam.
We are going to have to go for a lesser spec for the next car.

I would have liked the electric replacement for the ZS EV, but we are just a bit bothered that MG told Which? that they were working on a fix for the driver aid software but did not nail down a roll-out time.

If you really, really, really, want to LOVE your MG4, go and drive a new Dacia Duster manual. (Don't ask) ((No really, Dont ask!!!🤣)

No, please, just for a laugh, have a go in one.

The relief I felt returning to my wonderful MG4!!

The room, the pace, the absolute ease of operation.
Absolute bliss!!

I've only noticed that in cold weather. Same thing at about 15%, but only when climbing a fairly steep hill. In warmer weather it's been fine down to 4%, the lowest I've ever taken it.

Thanks for this balanced view. We did a test drive and loved it, but we are currently driving a mk1 skoda fabia! I'm also getting creaky so could do with something easier to ebter/exit, and something with a bigger boot. Our budget is 15k. This is seven times more than we've paid for any other car in about 40 years, and most of our other cars have far exceeded 100k miles. We actually sold on our old VW passat tdi with 300k on the clock! For 15k there are loads of great ICE cars that would fit the bill, and which I could get serviced /repaired by my trusted local mechanic.
However, all that having been said, I'm keen to jump on the EV bandwagon for some, possibly irrational, reason. It seems my choice of EV for 15k is between an older and higher mileage early model (eg BMW i3) or a much newer, low mileage model with lots of warranty, like the MG4. My heart says go for it, but having read all the niggles, my head says don't! I expect I'll go with my heart and hope for the best.
