Range loss in Winter

If your recent journeys efficiency has been around 2.34 miles per kWh then yes. That would be 2.34 x 50.5 ( kWh useable battery). Lots of short journeys in the cold , where the battery has not had time to heat up would give you this efficiency. This is only the car's guestimate though. If you did a longer jouney and your battery heated up to say high 3's and maybe even 4 (depends on your driving style and heater usage etc), then you would get more miles, although your mileage indicator would not necessarily show this.

Hi all

I have a 24 plate mg4 ev range meant to be 218miles I'm getting if I'm lucky 120miles at 100% charge is this right
That's quite normal in the winter.
It's cold in the morning and you have the heater on possibly the rear window heater plus lights and wipers. They all use power.

all you have to do is charge more often and worry less often 😉. It's normal, that is just guessing how much you will achieve based on your recent drive/usage, so if you are driving with the heater on, that will show as less range next time but of course if you don't use the heating next time, you will actually have longer range ... and so on until warmer days

Mine is a 2024 Trophy standard range. On MG website it says range 198 miles (279 miles in slow moving traffic-yeah, sure) and most info says that in winter that can typically degrade by 10-20%. I go to my office about once a week which is 62 miles away, so should comfortably get there and back only charging at home. How wrong I was! I drive like a granny and use ECO mode, pootling at 60 or less on motorways and dual carriageways and at least half the journey is in a 30 limit. Even in the height of Summer, when the charge was 100% and it was telling me I had 160 miles range I was having to stop to give a boost because I wouldn't make it home. The declared mileage at the start is always a lie; I would get more like 130 miles when the estimated was 160+, a number of times arriving home with <10 miles range. In Autumn, and now Winter I typically have to spend my lunchtime popping out to boost the charge by 20%+, which costs twice as much as 100% charge at home, and so with the home charge on top it costs more than when I used my diesel car (Honda Civic 1.6DTEC, 72mpg typically). The photo shows what the car is telling me - 123miles on 100% charge, yet I know I won't get 123miles, probably not much more than 100. And to re-iterate I don't accelerate hard, or dive fast; even lorries whizz past me on the dual carriageways and motorways it's like driving Miss Daisy. I really regret buying this car - anyone want a Jan 2024 ZS EV Trophy Connect for a good price?

What is your mi/kWh showing?

Isn’t it 198miles with the long range battery?

My 2022 SR shows 200 miles in summer and now in this weather, last time I topped it up to 100%, it showed 153 miles range. Do you drive with air-con on all the time? something doesn't add up if you always drive the way you say ...

No that’s the Standard Range figure.

For me, real world in the summer is around 180.

Winter around 130-140.

It should have been a heat pump. All EVs sold in Northern Europe should have them, it’s a mistake not to.

Charged my X Power, yesterday and over night, with me Granny Charger. It was showing, 100% and 217 miles, which was a suprise as it's usually been, 100% and 160 miles'ish, over Winter. Not been driving any different, still putting me foot down. So it was a nice suprise. 🙂👍

Can I ask how old your car is - I get around 300 miles in summer but it drops to around 200 for winter
I’m about the same 3.6 - 4.5 mi/kWh in summer. 2.6 in winter, i.e. 4°C or lower. 300 + miles in summer. 180-210 in winter depending on overall temp.

I find the question a bit strange.. acceptable loss of range ?
How long is a stick?

A given car has a fixed amount of battery capacity. How hot someone likes the cabin varies from person to person.

ZS also does not have any Heat pump so you are using electricity to heat conversion at 100% efficiency (besides the loss from the body onto surrounding).

Anyways sorry for the rant.

Agreed I was hoping to get Kona for that reason as they had Heat pump as standard but it was too cramped especially the back seat.

My wife is going to be the primary user and she can't do split rear view

ioniq 5 would have been nice but we were looking for cheap and cheerful.. 14k for SE seemed decent. I sold my HS Phev only a few months ago for 14k. Wish I still had it

It was the 38kwh Ioniq with similar range to the SR ZS.

There is a camera. The visibility is no better on the ZS.

If you press the m/kWh button twice, it will show the miles per kWh over all of the journeys you have made since it was last re-set. That will be a more accurate indication of your overall energy use. This number will only alter slowly as the seasons or your driving style changes.

Its not the most aerodynamic car and does not have heat pump for heat will use significantly more electrons.
Its quoted just over 3.5 miles / kwh - if you drive really well maybe 4 miles / kWh?
