Delay paying £190 car tax on EV until April 2026 (action needed before the end of March 2025)

Yes it does seem odd. Did I do something wrong? Will I need to SORN?

How do you change the date from April 1st to March 1st, couldn't find that option.

Yes says expires April 1st but also "12 month vehicle tax for vehicle registration XX01 XXX valid from 01 April 2025 £0.00Total £0.00"
There does seem to be some conflicting information there.🤔 Try checking back later and see if the status has updated. Perhaps it’s lagging behind.

Just done mine, and it's now due for renewal on 1st March 2026, I can't think of any reason why anybody else's should be different.

@MG Clive, what was your original tax renewal date? If it were not 1st April 2025 then a new date of 1st March is to be expected.

It is the renewal for those that had a date of 1st April that is adding confusion though if you did have the April date it would add more complexity.

I've just done mine, even though I only get an extra two months.

I had kept the V11 letter from a few months ago as someone recommended but it wouldn't let me use that code.

I had to dig out the V5C and use that. There were a lot of warnings and opportunities to cancel pointing out that I am paying for another year even though it isn't due until Jan 2026.

I persisted and I've saved myself maybe £20 overall.

And paying just before the annual increase too!

£32.50 saved

I originally retaxed my MG5 and daughters Merc A Class (diesel but also freeo_O) last month to be sure our beloved tax man didn't pull the plug a month early but retaxed it again on Monday with no issues.
Since I'm paying a stupid amount of tax for other vehicles in the house (including over £400 for an EV converted car) I have zero issues with doing this.

Agreed, don't think any of us on here, would have any qualms whatsoever, about, taking advantage of this little loophole.
Or is there? 😉🙂👍

I don’t even see it as a loophole really. I mean if you buy a years supply of shower gel, which goes up in price say next week. You don’t expect to pay the new increased price each time you shower with it.

You only expect to pay the price that it was at, on the very day when you bought it. 😎

I know some Yorkshiremen who would stop showering till the price came down again. 😂

Nah, I couldn’t do that. Mind you, if I knew the shower gel was going up next week, I certainly might buy 2 years supply now!!

Ha, if we could do that with our VED, we could “buy” 10 years supply at today’s (FOC) price! I mean why ever not? 🤔. Peter

So I wondered if I would get a letter even though the VED Checker says the car is taxed until 1st April 2026 and here it is. The key info is bottom right in red. The question is, should I start the tax process to see what is offered?

I presume it's saying your cars not taxed. As you've not payed. As from April 1st. EVs obviously have to pay. If that's the case, easy enough to re-tax it from March the 1st. 🤔
