My daughter wanted to replace the badly kerbed and scratched alloys on her Beetle Cabrio. Instead of spending £1200 on a new set of alloys I suggested that we could refurbish the existing wheels ourselves for a fraction of the price. So for the last two weekends we've been sanding and painting her alloys to get them close to factory fresh again. I was on sanding detail, and she was painting them (playing to our skills) Here's how they were before we started.
Some of the wheels needed epoxy putty repair where the edge of the wheel had deep gouges out of it in places.
After wet sanding with different grades of sandpaper (using a drill with a padded velcro sanding pad) and several coats of paint. The giant shower cap for the wheels made masking them easy.
After refitting
Comparision between front and rear (fronts refurbed, rears still to do)
Still working on the hub caps, and have new VW emblems to put on them once they've been painted. She's really pleased with the results. I've persuaded her that she should take it to Bristol Volksfest this year, and put it in the daily driver display (show off your pride and joy, rather than the concours)
Total cost about £60 in sanding pads, wheel masks, primer, paint, putty, and lacquer.
