Hi, Does anyone know how much it would cost to replace the main battery on an MG car, if it gets damaged, for example, a 2020 ZS ev

The original post is nevertheless very specific about damage and this can theoretically occur within warranty as a result of hardware (or perhaps even software) failure.
I could theoretically drive 600 miles without stopping.

And the original poster in their subsequent comment was querying outside of warranty.

With a similar likelihood to a petrol engine blowing a major gasket, seal, or piston, and with a similar cost associated therewith.

You are all missing the point.
The OP didn't ask about age related degradation, he cited battery damage.

yes but afterwards went on questioning 10 year battery state and incentive to drive EV; bit confusing but either way - not worth changing the battery unless covered by warranty or insurance. New one too expensive, second hand ... - no thanks, not keen on roasting myself due to a dodgy battery someone recovered from a submerged MG ...

Hi I was just thinking that if the car was say 10 years old and out of warrantee i think the battery would cost more than the cars worth, so where's the incentive to buy an eclectic car
Unless we are talking widespread damage by water or something, it's unlikely the pack is a write off. 3rd party repair to replace affected cells, at a fraction of the cost, rather than replacing the whole battery, will become much more common place - as it is in countries like Norway with widespread take up.

Replacing an entire battery due to damage, or degradation of a one or a few cells, will be akin to replacing an entire engine because a spark plug is damaged.

If we are talking water damage or fire damage, why not ask the same question of an engine replacement in a car such as a BMW 3 series? You'll often find cars written off in that scenario.

If you have even something minor like a blown head gasket in an ICE car after 10 years when it's out of warranty, chances are the work on the engine would be more than the car is worth.
Probably similar chances of both things occurring.

Hi, Does anyone know how much it would cost to replace the main battery on an MG car, if it got damaged, i have a 2020 ZS ev and wonder what the cost will be when the car gets older, i have heard it may cost many thousands of pounds.
So you are asking how much an EV battery pack will cost in the year 2030?

There isn't going to be a simple answer to that. And it will involve a lot of speculation.

As others have said, the question is really why you are replacing it.

Is there a bad module? That could be replaced for a small cost (plus labour, which may be more).

Or is there a need for a whole pack for some reason? In which case are you talking new or used?

Battery prices are coming down all the time, so a new one would probably cost less in the future than it does now.

But for a used car you'd probably replace it with a used one from a scrapped car.

The issue with batteries is more to do with second hand values of EV's.
Why buy an older EV when newer ones have much higher power/further mileages.
This is compounded by the slow degradation of the battery at about 2.5% per year.
That's 10% over five years and a further devaluation of the car.
Whilst batteries continue to improve the result will be faster devaluation of second-hand EV's.
