USB disk identification failure

OK someone suggested I turn off my phone , left it off for 10 minutes got in the car turned it on , plugged it in , nothing happened. Drove about 10 mins, got out , went to a shop. Got back in plugged in the phone ,started the car and 2 mins later everything is perfect.

I have started having this issue USB identification error recently a few months. did the factory reset and being to garage to update software and the problem came back after 24 hours. the V12 battery is draining if the car isnt used every day. after jumping the v12 battery the radio resets but three days later back to usb ID failure and same problems. I haven't plugged any phone into the car in weeks now so its going to the garage again today.

I didn't think a unused usb cable had a current draw on it. But when tested they said it did. I don't know how many different cables they tried and they didn't say the cable was faulty so I just felt a large unwanted red herring landed in my lap and didn't want to argue.
Smells like bull sh1t

So that makes 3 of us with the same issue using the same garage..... what's the chances?!?! :(

After the last update I hadn't had any issues and was starting to feel it had been resolved. Until I recently suffered 3 three re-occurrences close together - standard USB disk identification error followed by loss of all radio (which would have undoubtedly lead to a dead 12V battery if I hadn't DC'd the battery when the radio stopped working).

Anyway, I believe I can trace these to very specific scenarios and you're right that it's nothing to do with connecting a phone (I haven't done that since the earlier problems).

When Wave 105 was sold out I changed to Nation Radio South - which can only be accessed via the South Hampshire DAB radio group. On all 3 occasions I was listening to Nation and drove some way out of county (London x 2 and Swindon). Each time, the radio stopped working (as you'd expect on leaving the broadcast area) but soon after I got the usual USB error. Next time I came to the car no-radio at all - on any channel. So I am utterly convinced it's a software issue - I think as it isn't a national DAB channel it just "didn't know where to go" when it couldn't get a signal and got caught in a loop. So I DC'd on return to Hants each time and, hey presto, everything was restored and no further problems (till the next out of county trip...)

I reported this to Richmond Southampton and, after waiting several weeks for them to see it, took it in today to be greeted by the same warm, welcoming and re-assuring staff (not!). Anyhow, they "found no faults" (again, of course, because DC'ing and reconnecting removes the error codes) BUT they have upgraded the software from R33 to R38 - see pic - and asked me to "monitor it". They were "optimistic" that would solve it, but that's what they said after each of the last updates too....
Well, now here's something!

(First post here by the way, Hi everyone!)

My car isn't from Richmond Southampton. However, I've just come back from a trip to the Isle of Wight, and as part of that trip my daughter selected Hits Radio South Coast from the South Hampshire DAB multiplex!

Driving home, once I got to about Newbury, there was no signal, so I tried to select another radio station, and have had radio silence ever since, can select a station but no sound or station info.

What I'm seeing here is that my car is somehow allergic to Hampshire. (Or maybe its allergic to leaving Hampshire.)

I'm assuming that a battery disconnect tonight should resolve this. Could anyone quickly talk me through what to do?

You will need a 10mm socket (or spanner) to disconnect one of the 2 12V battery terminals by undoing the nut sufficiently to pull the cable off. Hold it off for about 30 seconds before putting it back on and tightening it up.

12V battery is on the right side near the windscreen under the bonnet.

Once done you will get error messages but these all go after a couple of miles driving and you may need to reset the steering by turning the steering wheel lock to lock a couple of times and the windows by fully up and down, this is just the car re-learning the settings.

It's not difficult so don't worry about it and much quicker than waiting for a dealer to look at it!

Thanks,

It's our only car, and I'm flying away for a few days with my daughter next month, leaving the wife with the car. She's already panicking about charging, and how to get help if she runs out of power, without risking her having a discharged battery and unnecessary error messages as well. I'll give it a go this evening when I'm home from work.

Have you tried switching to FM and if that works go back to DAB?

Have you a usb stick with music (MP3, flac) that you could plug in to see if that works. Sometimes my usb stick will have no sound until I cycle back through the radio; perhaps the reverse works.

Ah now, thanks. I'd rather these two quick fixes rather than the nuclear option of getting the bonnet up. I'll give them a go...

Just getting back to you all!

That was seemingly perfect solution. FM radio and USB stick didn't work, but I disconnected and reconnected the battery, the radio came on straight away, and after a little drive to clear all the error lights we're back to normal.

So, what I need to remember to do next time I'm on a long journey is make sure the radio is only ever set to something on the National DAB multiplex.
