The Ultimate MG5 "Real World" Energy Consumption Thread

March looking good so far! 3 days, 3 return trips, total 88 miles, average speed 25mph, average temp 10C, averaged 4.7 miles/ kWh. Only managed 3.6 in December (my first month with the car). No data for Jan and Feb as I wasn't able to drive (hip op).

    Charging speed puzzle

I've done a bit of reseach and it seems that an 11kW EVSE will only provide ~3.5 kW for a single-phase cable. Is that correct? If so I was ill-advised as to what cable to buy by the supplier.

    Charging speed puzzle

    The cable says '3G6 + 1 x 0.75' . It is a single-phase cable.

    Charging speed puzzle

I just tried my new MG5 with a new type 2 cable at a public charging station for the first time (I've charged at home with teh granny cable without a problem). I'm going on a long trip at the weekend so wated to make sure it all worked. So I plugged into the 'Shell Recharge' point at my local...

    A couple more newbie questions

Thanks, I have found the battery setting bar now, I must have done something different today. But I haven't got this to work, it still flashes after holding down 'OK'. And today it was worse; going from a 60 zone to a 70 zone the system didn't know and flashed the 'national limit' sign at me...

Do I really need an 'proper' EV charger?

Sounds great. Going a bit off-topic but I'd be really interested to know about your inverter and its connections to the car.

I think I might just use Google directions with Android Auto. Speed limits on there seem pretty good, and many temporary limits are known about as well.

Do I really need an 'proper' EV charger?

I've had my MG5 for 2 weeks now and have been charging it from the 'granny' charger. I could install a proper Type 2 charger but it's going to cost around £1000. I can charge the car to 50% overnight with the granny (it delivers 2.2 kW). 50% of charge per day (~100 miles) is more than enough for...

    A couple more newbie questions

Today the system missed a 'National Speed Limit' sign after a 50 zone, so it kept flashing '50' at me for the next ten miles as I was doing 55. Very annoying, I wish I could turn it off.

    A couple more newbie questions

On my SE there's no picture of a car on the Energy Management screen, and no battery seting bar. I can change charge times-of-day but not max charge level. So SE must be different to Trophy.

    A couple more newbie questions

Ading one more newbie question to my thread - hope that's OK 😀 In the summer I hired a Polestar 2 and that recommned charging to only 80% unless about to go on a long trip. This apparently prolongs battery life (my phone does the same). There's no such apparent setting for the MG5 (SE LR)...

    A couple more newbie questions

Maybe, but the last car I hired knew about them perfectly, from the satnav data. Reading signs is a c**p way of getting speed limits, for all sorts of reasons - e.g. slip roads on many motorways have speed signs which are much less than motorway speed, and are in line-of-sight of the front camera.

So what range were you getting in recent cold weather?

Excellent article! So MG5 is near the best of the bunch, Good to know. I will perhaps find out for myself when I drive 280 miles each way either side of Christmas.

So what range were you getting in recent cold weather?

Thank you for the details. Do you know why it's kept at +10 degrees, rather than higher? Is this unique to the MG5? Does this mean that loss of cold-weather range for the MG5 is worse than other EVs?

    A couple more newbie questions

Here in Cornwall, the 20 mph signs are mostly new, not overlays (generally the 20mph zones are 'inside' 30 mph zones). Certainly the ones I passed yesterday were new and very clear. The MG5 camera did not recognise them.

    A couple more newbie questions

Had my new MG5 SE for a week now, taking it easy on local roads, only done about 100 miles so far. Generally happy, but very disappointed with the speed limit indicator. In various hire cars I have used over the past 2-3 years, these have been reasonably accurate, presumably using mapped data to...

So what range were you getting in recent cold weather?

I am still confused about this. Elsewhere I have read that the battery will warm up to 20 degrees or above on its own while driving for 15-20 minutes (because the chemical reactions during discharge are exothermic, and because of internal resistance losses.). Ths suggests that, for a long drive...

So what range were you getting in recent cold weather?

Not done a full range test yet but yesterday got 3.7 miles/kWh on a 35 mile journey, +10 degrees, 40% at 40-50mph, 50% at 30mph, 10% in traffic / parking etc. Hardly used the heater, just a few short bursts of demist. That sounds a credible explanation, thanks Does anyone have any data on the...

So what range were you getting in recent cold weather?

I have just bought a new MG5 and am so far unimpresed with low temperature range, even at +10 degrees outside. I've now been reading various website explanations of this, but I don't agree with what they are saying. First quote from topgear.com: and this from AutoExpress: Both these...
