    MG5 Range - lower??

That's not you 'range', just a guess based on various factors including temperature, driving mode, recent driving style, and HVAC settings. It's a pretty poor guess when you consider that it seems to make no difference whether the heating is on full blast, or you've just got it set to 'Lo'...

Charging at home well below 7kwhr

kW is how power is measured - the charging speed in this case; kWh is a measure of total energy (consumed or stored). 'kW/Hr' makes no sense whatsoever. The onboard charger is rated at 6.6kW but I believe the actual energy stored will vary with the local voltage. My Zappi EVSE regularly reports...

    MG5 long range heater

Yes, I get a burning smell when the heater first comes on. No different to the smell of any resistive air heater really.

    Balancing charge for MG5 SR

My car spends a lot of time plugged in at home (waiting for then trickle charging from surplus solar) so the cable gets quite dirty/wet. It would be a real hassle to have to coil it up, clean it, and put it in the boot every time I go out. I have a separate type 2 cable which I carry with me for...

Can I limit charging to 80% and if so how?

No, you seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding about how EV batteries are wired. It would be highly wasteful to carry around redundant battery cells; why wouldn't you just use them all from the start (hint, this is what they actually do) and have a higher overall capacity and put less...

Can I limit charging to 80% and if so how?

There's a highly illogical tendency for people to believe that, because the BMS prevents use of the extreme ends of the battery voltage, this somehow eliminates all degradation. That's obviously nonsense. Battery degradation is a curve. The closer it is to 'full' or 'empty' the more the...

Can I limit charging to 80% and if so how?

There's lots of evidence. Just Google 'lithium ion calendar degradation state of charge'. It's about how long the battery spends fully charged.

Can I limit charging to 80% and if so how?

There's a wealth of information about battery health. The upshot is that the warranty is rather pessimistic so, even if you abuse the battery, it's unlikely to drop below the 70% capacity required to replace it. However, there are some tiny benefits (which will make a small difference to the...

    Motorway Miles

The standard range MG5 gets about 140 miles at 70mph in the worst conditions. You'll be absolutely fine in the LR, it's the ideal car for you. If you're ever in doubt you can just drive a little slower, but most of the time you'll be able to put your foot down without worrying.

    SATNAV .... alternative route options.

Yes, or the totally pointless NDR where you can drive 5 miles further at 70mph to arrive at the same time. I'd love to be able to tell it to never use the NDR under any circumstances.

Mine is definitely an hour out. Poor programming. I'm sure I'll cope.

    2022 LR Battery

You have to look at it in terms of the value at the time of purchase. When I bought my SR MG5, the price was the best I'd seen a > 50kWh EV for. The LR offers even better value. But the utility of the extra range diminishes. I've only driven beyond the range of my SR on 3 occasions. I guess I...

First 50kW charge - finished at 95% this normal?

80% need not be a hard and fast rule. I'd say don't go over 90% on a rapid charger, but 80-90% is typically under 15 minutes. Yes, it slows down, but those extra few percent might save you another stop. It's always worth working out how much you actually need. Rapid charging is expensive and...

    Long-ish Drive

With a 61kWh battery you really don't need to drive 80-20%. A 10% buffer is easily 20 miles if you need it to be. And you can add that extra 10% from 80-90% in about 10 minutes if you want. So 90-10% gives you 80% of your maximum on the second and subsequent legs. That's 120 miles worst case or...

Did I buy the long range?

70mph will use roughly 40% more energy than covering the same distance at 50mph. 250 miles of range becomes 178 miles. Then factor in the cooler weather.

Did I buy the long range?

What exactly do you mean by 'getting near the advertised range'? How are you measuring it? The car under reports the efficiency, especially over multiple short journeys. So you really need to look at the number of miles you're actually covering in relation to the battery percentage used...

Have MG been naughty releasing MG5 LR just one year after they introduced MG5

Exactly. It's not the same money at all. And second hand prices are so strong right now that you could easily trade up for minimal loss.

    Newbie Question

Certainly be cautious now it's colder, but it's amazing how far you can extend your range by driving carefully. I'd plan a stop at around 175 miles but be prepared to skip it if it turns out not to be necessary. On the other hand, it's probably also worth looking earlier in the journey because...

    Care to share your Valuation?

WBAC offered me £21,730 for my December 2020 silver MG5 Exclusive with 8,000 miles. Tempted to find a new one for close to that price and trade in. Could be worth a couple of £k in a few years, plus extra warranty etc.

    MG5 EV heater off

The heater is never 'on' when the temperature is set to 'lo'. What you are referring to as 'range' is simply a slightly weighted guess based on a simple, but flawed, algorithm. It simply (incorrectly) assumes that, if the HVAC system is in use at all, you will get lower range - that's why you...
