To be fair, the charging network is definitely improving. Just stopped last night at Donnington Park services and bored the pair of Gridserve chargers there are now upgraded to support dual charging, so now 4 vehicles can charge simultaneously.
I can confirm this is a great little charging spot and I'm looking out for similar places when planning longer journeys now, although when we used it the cafe was closed and we had to make do with snacks from Tesco and cheekily using the loos at the Premier Inn next door!
My (not so) humble opinion:
Best looks; decent tech; decent app: Hypervolt
Best tech; best app; uninspiring looks: Zappi
Decent looks; decent tech; works with variable charging tariffs: Ohme
Oh, and if you're using a 13A (or 10A) plug-in charger plug it in to something with a thermal cutout...
We have an EO Smarthome charger which does basic integration with PV but is not anything I'd recommend now, primarily due to the dreadful app and limited functionality. Ohme appear to be the only brand that Octopus, OVO (and Eon?) are all willing to integrate with for smart tariffs. I'd be very...
Ironically we have an Octopus branded EV charger installed in 2018 that doesn't support Intelligent. Met with deafening silence when I asked about a sideways migration from EO.
I've used a Tesco rapid charger which actually had a button where you could override the default (which was to stop at 80%) and tell it you wanted to carry on to 100%. It's easy to miss, especially given they're not all built the same. If a car isn't charging then it's fair game in my view.
