    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Yes, but I wasn't meaning anything otherwise - the end is still open to the atmosphere (and anything else).

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

True - though I should imagine there would be pressure to make the breather as short as possible, to allow for a compact, self-contained, installation. The extended breather may possibly consist of a flexible pipe, whose end is placed, er, somewhere "safe".

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Not really - an expansion tank is there for a liquid-only system, to allow for dimensional changes with temperature. The casing in question contains mainly air, with an amount (0.9 litres) of oil present - which is agitated furiously by the gears contained. The breather should allow free...

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

    I repeat: Hmm...

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Yes, that was always going to be the retrofittable fix - and probably works well enough, too. I wonder where it vents to, given that it's a "long" pipe? Anyway, thanks for the info - and I'm sure a lot of forum members will be feeling relieved!

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Well, for maximum efficiency, the gap between rotor and stator needs to be small, and this would seem to rule out any presence of oil - though the end-bearing would need to be lubricated. However, the diagram sort of implies that there isn't any partitioning between motor and gears, so it's all...

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Yes. Now that would be a difficult retrofit, as I'd have thought that the motor/transaxle unit would have to be removed and stripped. A large headache for MG...

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

If you think about it, breather design isn't straightforward - it has to block liquid flow in either direction, whilst permitting bidirectional air flow. It must help if there's plenty of space to work with - which is probably not the case with a rear-mounted electric drive...

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Changing the oil? Doesn't sound too promising...

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Well, if too much oil is lost, then the gear train will be deprived of lubricant, and the resulting grinding of meshed teeth could cause tiny metal fragments to become suspended in the oil, causing the grey colouration.

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Maybe the drain plug isn't magnetic? Nevertheless, not good, coupled with the oil loss.

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Yes, it does, so maybe the breather is somewhere else - or possibly it performs both roles.

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

There's this picture from post 346 (thanks Hallix73): https://www.mgevs.com/attachments/9f513a1d-9b3d-4cc1-b801-32e55b475786_1_105_c-jpeg.11933/ I'm sort of assuming that the small "chimney" at the top right would be a breather.

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Somehow reassuring - did BMW fix it with a modified breather?

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Hmm - discoloured oil, possible transmission oil starvation whilst driving at 70mph?

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Yes, you're absolutely right - let's hope we can get some convincing answers in the very near future.

    MG4 Reduction Gearbox Oil Leak

Hi - this is my first post here. I ordered an SE LR last Friday, and was somewhat alarmed when I subsequently started to read - in this forum - about the oil leak problem. At first, I wasn't unduly worried, but then it became apparent that this fault was present in (probably) all MG4s (or at...
