MG Assist / AA recovery - good news!

I've just signed up for a MG service plan, so I thought I'd check out the included MG Assist (which is provided by AA). I looked at the AA website information and discovered this about their app: "It's OK when you've got the AA app in your pocket Report a breakdown quickly and track when your...

Stop and start granny charging via power lead

For the benefit of anyone else finding this... I've just discovered that Home Assistant is able to send a command to the car to start or stop charging. (And quite a few other commands.) It's extremely simple once you know what you're doing 🤣

    Charging losses

@Julian Edwards this is what my Home Assistant system reports for the car's power. This is also with a granny charger. (This may not be exactly what the power is going into the battery but it's probably fairly close.) It seems to charge at a higher rate at the start of the charging period and...

Stop and start granny charging via power lead

Thanks for that, and apologies to @Coulomb for not paying attention to it. However I think I may be able to solve this problem. The Home Assistant system enables me to open and close the car doors. When the car is charging opening the doors stops the charge - I can see that the current going...

Stop and start granny charging via power lead

So I've convinced myself that what I'm doing is OK when starting the charge, but I also often stop the charging process while it's running (by disconnecting the granny charger from the mains). Can anyone see a problem with this (although it's not the ideal thing to do)?

Stop and start granny charging via power lead

Aha - breaking the rules, you missed point 1: 1 Ensure the vehicle is power OFF and all doors are closed. :ROFLMAO:

Stop and start granny charging via power lead

I don't know. But surely the effect on the car is the same as when someone is charging at a commercial charging point and they return to the car while it's still charging and they tell the charger to turn off. (I'm assuming that's possible, but I don't have much experience of this, I always...

Stop and start granny charging via power lead

What I'm doing is this: 1 Ensure the vehicle is power OFF and all doors are closed. 2 Open the charging port door. 3 Connect the 7 pin charging plug to the socket on the vehicle. Lock the vehicle. 4 Connect the charging device plug to the domestic electricity supply. Slightly different...

Stop and start granny charging via power lead

When the Shelly relay switches on the granny charger doesn't respond for 6 seconds, it then draws 7.3 watts for exactly 8 seconds and then draws the full 2.16 kW. So I don't think the relay contacts are getting hammered. (And the relay has temperature, overpower, and overvoltage load...

Stop and start granny charging via power lead

I use a Home Assistant automation to control charging our car with a granny charger. It switches the power to the granny charger by controlling a Shelly relay (Pro 1PM) which has various protection systems. I've been using this for about six months without any problems. The Shelly relay can also...

SOC vs HV/LV delta and balancing….

I charge our MG4 SE SR with a granny charger. The mains supply to the charger is switched on with a Shelly relay and this also monitors the mains power. And I can plot this with Home Assistant automation. Not sure if this helps but I've just finished a balancing charge and this is what the mains...

    Charge Overrunning

Did you get this running? If you look at the HA integration there's a section on gateway refresh settings which includes "Gateway grace period after car shutdown" which is 10 minutes. So you may need to force the car to respond before trying to send a command to turn on the heating. My other...

    Surprisingly short battery balancing period

Well for me that's a compelling reason not to regularly charge the car to 100%. I really like how the regen braking works, and of course it's good to recover the energy to the battery rather than heating the brake discs ?

    Surprisingly short battery balancing period

@djngolf and @Martinonline I have a device that measures the ac current going into the charger (a Shelly EM). That's where the graph above comes from. You can see there are power spikes after the main charge has finished - while the balancing takes place. I think it's been mentioned here that...
