beam
A beam engine is a type of steam engine where a pivoted overhead beam is used to apply the force from a vertical piston to a vertical connecting rod. This configuration, with the engine directly driving a pump, was first used by Thomas Newcomen around 1705 to remove water from mines in Cornwall. The efficiency of the engines was improved by engineers including James Watt, who added a separate condenser; Jonathan Hornblower and Arthur Woolf, who compounded the cylinders; and William McNaught, who devised a method of compounding an existing engine. Beam engines were first used to pump water out of mines or into canals but could be used to pump water to supplement the flow for a waterwheel powering a mill.
The rotative beam engine is a later design of beam engine where the connecting rod drives a flywheel by means of a crank (or, historically, by means of a sun and planet gear). These beam engines could be used to directly power the line-shafting in a mill. They also could be used to power steam ships.
I've twice now accidentally knocked off my headlights when toggling high beam via the stalk. I normally use the front of my fingers to knock the stalk forward but find I sometimes catch the automatic headlight toggle.
Do people use their fingertips on the end of the stalk only or are just more...
My drivers side headlight appears to be blocked at the top of the beam, creating a sharp dark cut off on the road ahead, while the passenger side beams way ahead of the driver's side.
MG service says it's normal for the Drivers side to be lower, but this feel quite restricting in how far I can...
I have a 2024 (73) MG ZS EV Trophy connect SR. I bought it in August and it's been back to the dealer twice so far for faults (only 1 out of 4 were fixed), about to go in again to fit a part ordered for steering knock issue.
At the weekend I did a 145 mile journey in the evening (just made it...
Hi my car is arriving tommorow and I just realised this feature is very important to me but my brain just realised it. I work at nights and I need the auto high beam but do I have this? I am getting the 51kWh 2023 plate. Please say yes ?
Has anyone done, or know how to, adjust the headlight beam sideways [i.e. left to right] found the up and adjusters on the top ok [Allen key]. but sideways not so obvious, cog-wheel underneath to the side?. with a Philips screwdriver ???
Edit Nov 2024:
Don't all shout at once, but...
Headlights on (not on auto), with the lights slider switch fully left. More than once now I have pushed the arm to choose main beam and, in the process, accidentally moved the switch to the right - so that I find myself on sidelights. Did it last night on a bendy B road and it scared me more...
