meter

The metre (or meter in North American spelling; symbol: m) is the base unit of length in the International System of Units (SI). Since 2019 the metre has been defined as the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299792458 of a second, where the second is defined by a hyperfine transition frequency of caesium. The metre was originally defined in 1791 by the French National Assembly as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along a great circle, so the Earth's polar circumference is approximately 40000 km.
In 1799, the metre was redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar, the bar used was changed in 1889, and in 1960 the metre was redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. The current definition was adopted in 1983 and modified slightly in 2002 to clarify that the metre is a measure of proper length. From 1983 until 2019, the metre was formally defined as the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum in 1/299792458 of a second. After the 2019 redefinition of the SI base units, this definition was rephrased to include the definition of a second in terms of the caesium frequency ΔνCs. This series of amendments did not alter the size of the metre significantly – today Earth's polar circumference measures 40007.863 km, a change of 0.022% from the original value of exactly 40000 km, which also includes improvements in the accuracy of measuring the circumference.

    Hybrid Odometer Not Relevant

I was recently watching a Utube video from the "I Do Cars" engine tear down expert, and he was disassembling a Prius hybrid engine which failed at 73,000 miles on it. He pointed out the meaningless nature of Odometees in Hybrid cars, as a way of actually knowing how much wear the engine has...

"Strange" readings from the Current Journey Power Consumption meter

I've not seen this issue raised before (I think) so, here goes: 2022 MG5 Exclusive LR, pre-facelift, about 14,500 miles "on the clock". I tend to try and switch periodically to the Current Journey, Power Consumption meter whilst "on the road" to confirm that I am driving "to maximum...

power meter not 0 at rest

somewhere recently there was a discussion about the power meter still reading a small positive number once stopped. The worry was that the battery was still discharging. Well I had the opposite experience today. Using OPD I cruised to a stop at traffic lights and the power meter was still...

    The Watt meter etc

Why is it that when I'm going down hill the regen/watt meter gives a -Kw number, If I step on it it gives a Kw figure, to my remaining braincell that is counter intuitive, it should be +Kw on regen and -Kw on acceleration surely. Also why is the default option on start up Normal and not Eco...

    Smart Meter in Dumb Mode

Hi, I am on Ecotricity fixed rate but can only get the daytime rate of 22.29p as my meter gets no signal so my SMETS2 meter is stuck in dumb mode. I've tried asking for an external "T3 aerial" but I am told that I won't get any upgrades to my meter hardware although the industry may at some...

Just thought I'd report back on the conversation I've had with British Gas today. While I can't fault the lady I've dealt with, the policy they have just beggers belief. I went onto my online account to look at switching tariffs from my current to one tailored to an EV. On the Switch Tariffs...

    Octopus and Export payments

Since we got our solar panels and battery and set up export payment, I've had a few occasions where Octopus failed to credit our account for electricity export (i.e. not just on one bill, but just stopped including them for several months until I noticed & pulled them up about it). Each time...

Octopus won’t replace my smets1 meter

I’ve recently identified that we are on an old British Gas smets1 meter. We called and spoke to Octopus who have said they won’t come and upgrade it because it’s technically a smart meter, even though they can’t take readings from it. Additionally, they think it’ll upgrade automatically one day...
