reliability

Reliability engineering is a sub-discipline of systems engineering that emphasizes the ability of equipment to function without failure. Reliability describes the ability of a system or component to function under stated conditions for a specified period of time. Reliability is closely related to availability, which is typically described as the ability of a component or system to function at a specified moment or interval of time.
The reliability function is theoretically defined as the probability of success at time t, which is denoted R(t). In practice, it is calculated using different techniques and its value ranges between 0 and 1, where 0 indicates no probability of success while 1 indicates definite success. This probability is estimated from detailed (physics of failure) analysis, previous data sets or through reliability testing and reliability modeling. Availability, testability, maintainability and maintenance are often defined as a part of "reliability engineering" in reliability programs. Reliability often plays the key role in the cost-effectiveness of systems.
Reliability engineering deals with the prediction, prevention and management of high levels of "lifetime" engineering uncertainty and risks of failure. Although stochastic parameters define and affect reliability, reliability is not only achieved by mathematics and statistics. "Nearly all teaching and literature on the subject emphasize these aspects, and ignore the reality that the ranges of uncertainty involved largely invalidate quantitative methods for prediction and measurement." For example, it is easy to represent "probability of failure" as a symbol or value in an equation, but it is almost impossible to predict its true magnitude in practice, which is massively multivariate, so having the equation for reliability does not begin to equal having an accurate predictive measurement of reliability.
Reliability engineering relates closely to Quality Engineering, safety engineering and system safety, in that they use common methods for their analysis and may require input from each other. It can be said that a system must be reliably safe.
Reliability engineering focuses on costs of failure caused by system downtime, cost of spares, repair equipment, personnel, and cost of warranty claims.

    Reliability with gearbox/other issues?

Hi all! Thanks for the add, much appreciated. Looking into getting my first PHEV next week. I have been given the spec of a (phase two) MG EHS 1.5T GDI 258ch PHEV Luxury from 25/03/2024. Having seemingly researched this to death and bored my Wife as well as the rest of the family it seems this...

Would you buy your ‘leased’ MG4?

Unexpectedly I have to decide in the next few months whether to hand my 1 year old MG4 LR back to the company who are providing it under a 36 month salary sacrifice scheme, or purchase the car from them (either way I have to pay £5k to my employer due to early termination). I really like the...

    What's your km count? (odometer)

I'd like to know how reliable the car is in the long term. I used to have a 2005 Ford Fiesta that lasted for 150.000 km. How long has your car been able to survive so far?

Is rust a problem on early MG5s?

Hi folks, Maybe you can help me. I am often being told that "modern MGs rust", that they are not well protected and that after 4 years or so there are problems. Is this true at all with MG5s? There must be a number of you with older 5s now who can comment. I'd like to gather some evidence...

    MG3 Vs Yaris

I am currently driving a Toyota Corolla and like the way it drives but the wife finds it a bit low to the ground. So recently I took a test drive in a Yaris Cross and a MG3 over the same route. First was the Yaris Cross. The first thing I noticed was how harsh and loud the engine was. Then...

    Insane Wait Times (UK Dealerships)

Hi all, I've registered after having took delivery of my new MG4 SE Long Range about a month ago. It's not my first EV after having run my Mazda MX-30 for 2 years, but I do have concerns over the MG's reliability. The super short version is the cars drivers side headlamp has started to fail...

Advice on new car choice - MG ZS EV... Or not?

Hello everyone, potential new MG EV owner here. Hope you can all help with a few questions I have before I make the final decision. I'm looking at buying a used MG ZS EV as my next car (it will be my first foray into EVs). The options I've got are both 2021 pre-facelift and have reasonable...

How to reliably turn lane keeping off?

I have tried various ways of turning lane keeping off before I start a journey but the only way to do it reliably has been to do it on the move which is clearly undesirable. I’m finding that if I turn it off soon after entering the car, sometimes I don’t get the confirmation request, and always...

    MG4 Owners - Reflections.

I have owned my MG4 SE SR Camden Grey for about 9 months now and judging by some of the posts here, I consider myself fortunate to have one of the few owners who have had no real problems to speak of. Hi, I'm a newbie here. I've had a Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid for 6 months. It's a great car, but I wanted to get a fully electric car instead. I had a test drive in an MG4 and liked it, so I placed an order for an SE standard range. I spoke to the dealer today and he says it will be around 2...

    Cold feet !

I joined this forum a few weeks ago and am becoming more concerned by the day! I’ve not done the sums on reported issues over satisfied customers, but to me the failure rate seems to be high with the MG brand. Is it now the time to cancel my order and switch to a European brand EV?
