Hi everybody,

Planning a trip to York and surroundings to visit the National Railway Museum and one or more heritage railways.

We will be traveling by boat to Hull and from there onwards towards York.

We will also be visiting Middlesbrough sometime during our stay.

Any tips with regards to charging facilities and must have RFID cards/ operators?

I currently have Shell Recharge, Fastned and Zap-map at my disposal.

Thanks for everyone’s help.

Cheers,
Jeroen

Can't help with charging around there ... but can help with "cultural" sights (i.e. pubs). ;)

Always welcome ?
Moved out nearly 20 years ago and haven't returned but it was a lovely City and I doubt it has been ruined since!

Lots of good pubs, for a student at least.

There were lots of museums as well as the excellent Railway museum, which I visited several times.

The Yorkshire Moor historic railway was good back then. Pickering. Whitby and Robin Hoods bay are worth a stop if you have time to take the long route to Middlesborough.

If the weather is nice you could walk around the City walls.

There are two York “hyperhubs” on the outer ring road of York which are worth seeking out for the price: Poppleton and Monks Cross for 59p for upto 150kW the last time I used them. They are BP Pulse, and typically work better with the app (pre load it) but be prepared to swap charger if one doesn’t seem to work. The Monks Cross one has a few coffee shops nearby if you want a coffee whilst you wait.

There’s a MFG at Thirsk which I hear is good, and a MFG at Bilbrough Top on the A64 which might be convenient.

As mentioned above by @Bam Bam the NYMR is good if you are interested in steam, from Pickering to Whitby via Goathland. Haven’t been in a few years though.

I have used the MFG at Beverley (close to Hull) which worked fine. If you go to Pickering for the railway, the main town car park has some DC chargers, there are a few more in the car park opposite Lidl. The DC chargers I just use contactless, I didn't use the ones near Lidl, I think they are app based.

I was in York recently and saw this charge station at Monk Cross at the park and ride, handy for leaving the car on charge and get the bus into York

Be careful with this tactic. I would move the car out of the Monks Cross charging bays because there’s a 90-minute limit /overstay charge. There are other options like Nunnery Lane car park in the centre which has 7kW /50kW chargers and might be cheaper and more convenient overall, even taking into account parking charges, depending on how many of you there are in the car. Have a look on Zapmap.

My son and I love steam. Visiting the A4 Mallard at the National railway museum and a few heritage railways is the main goal of our journey ?

NYMR looks great, thanks.

Depending how far you’re willing to travel, the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway is always worth a trip. Just over 50 miles from York.

My wife is taking our MG5 to Leeds & York on its first long trip. Upper Poppleton seemed to be the best bet. Reasonable price, fast chargers, and a Dobbies garden centre to have lunch while charging for the long run home.

You are fortunate in not only visiting one of the UK's most historic and beautiful cities but also York City Council's EV Charging sites offer probably the best rates for EV charging anywhere in the UK.
There are 2 "Hyperhubs" on the ring road around York which offer lots of facilities plus low cost rates.

If you are visiting Leeds then there is a Tesla charging station not too far away from Crown Point retail park. It’s open to all just download the Tesla App when I tried it out if you can charge before 10 am it was 44 pence per KW.

Unfortunately the days of 25p/kWh in 2022 have gone - they are now 59p or more so it's cheaper to use a Tesla open to all.

Plus if you look at Zapmap comments they are not the most reliable as BP are now looking after them!

Being a resident of the York area I have to confess that my use of them is limited as I charge at home most of the time.
Pity if from what you say they have gone downhill.
