I was at the Everything Electric Show today in Farnborough.

I wasn't able to get on the MGEV forum while there. In fact I could barely get internet at all on the WiFi or via Three.

Anyway, this is what I look like and I expect to wear the same blue overshirt tomorrow so if any fellow forum lurkers see me tomorrow feel free to say hi!

I realise that as a rapidly balding man that I probably look like 80% of the everything electric audience, but maybe you'll recognise me.

It's a good look pal.
Don't knock it. ?

Looking at the schedule for tomorrow I've circled pretty much all the panel discussions so I guess I'll spend the day rushing from the theatre at one end to the one at the other end.

Hope you had a good time. I was there on Friday, I thought it was a good show. Biggest sensation seemed to be the Renault 5, it obviously has broad appeal.
Yeah, I was more interested in checking out the R5 and the Hyundai Inster and they were very popular. Cyberster as well.

R5 is a good looking car. Not much room in the back though - I saw Jack the reviewer try and fail to get his legs in.

The huge hundred grand plus BMWs were getting very little attention - just not realistic for most people.

This was my third time going.

I didn't do any test drives this time because we are happy with our MG4. I mostly listened to the panel discussions about electricity policy, heat pumps and lifestyle choices.

Journey
Back home now but ended up with only 7% charge left after a very careful drive. Tighter than I would have liked!

Luckily I decided to add 6% on Friday off the solar as a contingency in case of diversions. I hadn't factored in all of the pick-up and drop offs at the entrance/exits, so it turns out it wasn't contingency at all!

Yes, the Alpine version looked cool too.

This BMW was priced at £111k!!!

Hardly anyone was looking at it, but there was interest in the minis: but apparently the R5 is going to undercut the mini by up to £10k, which - IF true - will be an interesting challenge for BMW.

I started walking up to the Mini Clubman because it looked practical and stylish, then noticed it said £52,000 on the info and quickly walked away shaking my head.

I guess maybe these are starting prices and real prices will be lower as time goes on.

A new model probably won't get many discounts while they are in limited supply, and they will be sold off much cheaper towards the end of the run.

The R5 seems a big step up from the Zoe. Much better looking, larger battery and cheaper to boot!

Some other snaps I took at the show. The van is a modern EV reinterpretation of the classic Morris commercial van.

Although I am not generally a fan of retro styling (as opposed to actual classics, which I love), this one was very well done.

It is increasingly looking like the West is taking steps to close down cheap imports from China etc by raising import taxes. The days of cheap elecric vehicles may well be on the way out, not sure if protecting companies in this way is a good long term move, although jobs and skills do need to be protected and nurtured. It will be interesting to see what affect this will have on the second hand car market over the coming years. Perhaps a very good time to pick up a bargain whilst it lasts.

Yes I quite like that Morris Van.

Vehicles were more practical in the 1950s.

Good pastel colour choices for it as well.

Yes the EU and USA are making a big mistake I think.

Hopefully the UK won't be pressured to follow that lead and we can benefit from both.

I think the French have been smart, though, by incentivising smaller vehicles with French batteries, hence the R5, EC3, Dacia Spring.

German, Japanese and American companies seem to have no interest in small EVs because they can't get margins on them, and they can't compete with the Chinese on volume. They are going to effectively turn themselves into boutique auto-makers, but they are heavily indebted and there are already boutique auto-makers so it will be ruinous for them.

Subsidies ahoy to keep high-paid auto workers in jobs producing overpriced cars.

Especially if Trump wins again since he's been quoted as saying he would impose import tariffs of "200% or 500%" on imported cars. (I can't find the article where I read this but will keep looking!)

We had a van just like that come to where we were living at the time, and bring us Ice Cream, twas the late 1960's ?

I started walking up to the Mini Clubman
Was it a Clubman or an Aceman? Mini dropped the Clubman from the range, if they had made an electric version of the Clubman it would have been on my shortlist for an EV.

These are the 3 electric Minis in their range

Sorry it was a countryman - huge for a "mini"!

Just shows how quickly I walked on by once I saw the price!
