Auto Express MG5 news. End of the road

Surely we all knew the 5 was going to be replaced by an estate 4 at some point?
The MG guy hasn't spoken of an MG4 estate though in that article, he just said between the MG4 as it is now and the new ZS replacement, they have enough market coverage, so maybe no estate coming. I suspect they didn't sell enough MG5's here to justify a new estate. Generally no one wants them now, the SUV seems to trump everything else.

AHH i see. I think that would be a huge shame, but seems the way all car manufacturers seem to be going now.

I'm ending up looking at Berlingo type 'mutli vans' as my next one as there isn't anything obvious to replace my 5 with across any maker.

Nothing that beats the 5 according to these.....

I'm not so sure about that. I've seen lots of MG5 taxis.

I see their point that the MG5 fits between their other cars, but personally I only bought an MG at all because I wanted an estate and it was the only (affordable) BEV estate offering. If that applies to lots of other MG5 owners then they could be shooting themselves in the foot because we'll likely just go elsewhere.

Well there is the Astra Estate EV, that would probably be comparable, but the price is hideous, unless they'll negotiate very heavy discounts!

Oh yeah, there's definitely a market Stuart, I just think MG have decided it's not huge enough to develop a replacement a mass market model in the sector. The MG5 was never planned to be an MG for us anyway, someone just figured out they could rebrand the Roewe iE5 for peanuts incurring almost zero development costs and make a quick buck on them. It seems to have been a good idea!

I bet they are still selling it elsewhere in the world, sold massively in South America as a simple to fix easy Ev

The posh marques are bringing out estates, so they must be "aspirational", I'd have thought. I've always liked estates although as I get older and creakier I think a move to something a bit taller may be forced on me.

All in the 40 + k bracket

The Vauxhall just about under

Sigh
Well the Trophy was almost £34k until recently, now they're £21k, so maybe there's a lot of movement on the Vauxhall as well, (I know it's not run out/end of life, so less of course) Vauxhall have historically always offered very heavy discounts to those who can haggle well.

Just had a look, yep, heavy discounts! Brand new, but pre reg. with 10 miles on it. £14k discount. (Before haggling for a little more off!)

For interest this is how many MG5s were registered in the UK. Nice easy website Search results for 'mg5' - How Many Left?

That looks quite odd. Weren't the Excite and Exclusive pre facelift in the UK? Where have they been hiding if 11,500 of them got registered in 2024. Or, are the model names different in other parts of the UK?

Later......... Sorry, misunderstood the data. It is the number currently licenced or sorn'd.

Still, roughly 15,000 estate cars isn't nothing and there is currently very little choice.

That looks like most people who wanted one, got one in the first couple of years and haven't got to the point of changing their car again yet! So saturation point for an MG estate in the UK is around 15k, despite the facelift. I'd have expected the facelift to drive more sales than it has. Maybe it's the more conventional, or last generation car styling it still has, (despite the facelift), in comparison to current EV design.

Except, it isn't competing against current EV designs because there weren't any alternatives until quite recently.

I meant design as in styling, rather than format. (Estate car) I love mine, but it does look last generation from a styling point of view, when compared with the latest EV designs.

I find the MG5 estate great for the dogs (had mine 3 .75 years so far)
These blasted SUV things have very high boot sills and bumpers.
Very difficult to lift a dog into !
I will keep my MG5 estate until there is a really good replacement.
No doubt when the motoring industry believes we all have SUVs the will decide that cars with boots are what we want.

I didn't realise my MG5 SE was so rare.. my car is one of only 72 registered this year according to that data
