Can you have a battery and ev, and charge both on cheap octopus go each night and never use peak electric?

Yes, takes a bit of work but it's great to see your average in single digits

I have an MG ZS LR and Powerwall 2 13.4kWh battery, plus 3.4kWp 8 panel solar array, and this runs the house and car almost completely on off peak rates. I say almost, as the inverter takes a very small amount of electric in the course of its operation.

The solar array can provide enough to charge the battery and export surplus during the Summer months, but during the Winter the battery is charged overnight on the GO cheap rate, and will run the house until the following nights off peak slot. The car charges in the same off peak time as and when needed.

I'm perhaps missing something obvious, but why do you use solar to charge the battery during summer months? Don't octopus pay more for your exported solar than they charge you overnight, so wouldn't it make more sense to not charge during the day and sell those units to octopus, then buy them back to charge overnight at a lower rate?

I was always thinking the same until someone explained. Some early adopters got FIT not SEG payments so they got paid for generation regardless of if it was used or sent to grid ergo better to use it yourself.

Neither my car nor charger are compatible with Octopus Intelligent GO, so I am on plain Octopus GO, which costs 8.5p pkWh cheap rate (5hrs) and pays 8p pkWh export.
