Yet another problem with my MG4. Recently it has started, or has not started to charge at home. I'm following the step by step instructions in the quick start guide to the letter but it still won't charge. I can sit in it and start it charging manually bur as soon as you open the door to get out it stops charging and won't re-start. I can start it charging with the app on my phone but it takes two or three attempts. Once it does start chrging as shown by the "waves" travelling up the battery icon but there isn't any green lights surrounding the charger plug but these have been present when the damned thing failed to automatically charge a few months ago. I've had the car now for seventeen months and always bar twice charged it with the granny charger as I don't do a lot of mileage, an average of 145 miles a month without any great ptoblems other than this refusal to start charging without my intervention.

What’s the supplied rate of the granny charger? Is there a charge limit set? Does it charge on DC? Does it charge on AC from a public charger? Testing those things out yourself might be quicker than taking it to a dealer
Might need a replacement CCU

Do you have a type 2 to type 2 cable to try it on a 7kW public charger ?
If this fails then you know it's the car and not the granny charger.

Why not? It’s powerful and handles well. For versatility why not?

?

Agreed ... and for when you do need the distance, the added-value really cuts in. I usually only do a similar mileage per month, but with two 1800-2000 mile round trips to SW France each year, it's a 'no-brainer' (sorry - horrible expression - but descriptive enough!)

This thread is not especially clear. Are you using a trickle charger? I use an MG home charger. I have given up on the app however. It adds very little of use. After 1130 pm. it charges as scheduled. There was a price drop before delivery so we opted to get the charger at the same time we picked up the car. We have never regretted it. The option to use an EV reduced charge per KWh is a huge cost saving. The cost of the charger will soon be paid for by the cost savings. If you can get one installed it is a much better way to manage the car charging process.

Yeah, if it had been on sale at the time I bought mine, we might have got an ER, not for the range but the performance / handling balance.
I decided to wait a couple of months or so till last November 2023, for our local dealer (Oh-dear-ler!) to get their first of the new longer range for our French trips. One unmentioned disappointment for our main purpose was the change of on-board charger to 7kW from the previous 11kW. This would be of some extra use in the EU, where (I understand) the 11kW is still fitted. So why change it for the UK, one wonders ...? (The Oh-dear-ler didn't know what I was talking about when I queried this!)

Presumably MG UK decided it wasn't useful in the UK and I would assume the 7kW charger is slightly lower cost to fit.

MG UK make lots of - seemingly arbitrary - decisions without visibly engaging with existing drivers or the public. Perhaps they do surveys and polls, but I've never seen one.

They do indeed - some rather more annoying than others, but all frustrating. Surveys and polls ... I very much doubt it. They are far too busy thinking up new "sillies" to challenge us with.

I have a similar problem. For the past few weeks I've had problems charging my MG4 Trophy (11 months old) from my Zappi2 charger. If I need to add some charge in the daytime, I plug in the Zappi cable, set the Zappi to Fast charging, and use the MGiSmart app to start the charging. But nothing happens except the Zappi app telling me the 'eV is preventing charging'. Sometimes it starts to charge but stops after a couple of kWh, saying the same message even though the car is well below being fully charged. If I disconnect the cable and repeat the process, it usually starts to charge properly after the second or third attempt. The car is going in for its first service in a couple of weeks so hopefully they can find the problem or explain what I'm doing wrong.

I can’t see that you are doing much wrong – unless you have a hidden setting somewhere, either on the Zappi or the car, causing conflict. My Trophy ER is at 10 months, and I also have the same Zappi for home charging. My mileage in the UK is very low, so, as I also have an ASHP, solar PV and battery, these all take preference. My Zappi is therefore permanently set to ‘Fast Charge’ only with no scheduling or control allowed over the car’s charging. Thus, I always use the iSmart app only to set the charging schedule (this is about the one thing that it usually gets right!) on an ‘as and when’ basis during cheap rate grid periods (as these are cheaper than solar export income).

The Zappi always shows ‘Charging delayed by EV’ once it all settles down after plugging-in the cables at both ends – during which it clicks and clunks a bit, and does initially show ‘Charging’ momentarily, but this is quickly overruled by the EV.

I always set each session carefully on the app for ‘charge to’ rate and ‘start’ and ‘stop’ times, then ensure it says it’s saved. It can very occasionally still fail, and it is very annoying that you can’t check (as far as I can see) each new live charge schedule after setting it up. I therefore always double-check, if during waking hours, that charging has started. I think it is also essential not to set anything separately on the car. I find this works (almost) every time. I also use exactly the same procedure with a Grannie charger when abroad (and at home, if ever needed) without problem.

I thought the ER still had 11 kw charging capability. If not, that's disappointing.

What real use is 22kW charging in the UK? charge twice as fast over night if you have a 3 phase system (not common in the UK)? But I guess AC charging causes less wear and tear on the battery.
