Normally we inly charge at home but have strayed away for a break. Whilst at a fast charger we noticed a non-MG charging alongside with the driver sat in. Can we do this! Is it considered "safe practice"?

Yes totally and it is quite a common practice at rapid chargers. If you don't need the toilet or a drink etc then you may as well sit in the car.

I found DC charging continues whether you lock or unlock car, with doors open etc. But for AC charging when you unlock the car it stops and then restarts after a while.

I was told by the sales guy at my garage when collecting the car it wasnt possible to charge whilst being in the car, but thats simply not true.

So we don't need to stand out in the rain any more! Thanks everyone - it only arises when we stray too far from home. Still having range anxiety when miles left gets below 40.

I had the problem at Shell @ Waitrose Southend in Feb
We went to the Cotswolds and based at the Premier Inn A40 Cheltenham which had a Shell (avec Waitrose) next door. We didn't have any issues charging while sitting inside, save for it slowing up @ around 95%. Having said that, it was still darned quick.

It was a bit dear, but nearly all our charging is done at home, so we shrug our shoulders and just pay up. The average cost over the year is still cheap as chips.
