Hi folks,

I’ve got a MG4 Long range.

I only use rapid or fast charging.

Can I check what amps are the best to speed the charge up?

I’ve been told 16A is best

Thoughts appreciated

Should be more like 350A peak @ 400V (depending on SOC and temperature).

"Fast" charging in the UK is AC charging at 7kW or higher (up to 22kW 3 phase). A 7kW single phase charge point will deliver up to 32A at 230V, and the car's onboard charger will use that to charge the high voltage battery.
Rapid charging is DC charging of 50kW or higher.
Ultra rapid is DC of 150kW or higher.

(General rule of thumb).

Ultra rapid is DC of 150kW or higher.
(y)... out of interest did you mean 'Rapid' is 50kW to 149kW and 'Ultra Rapid' is 150kW. Or does anything above 50kW class as Rapid, of which above 150kW is of the 'ultra' subset of 'rapid'?

Not that it matters as, either way, my answer to the OP is still correct, I think

i.e. the LR charges at up to 142kW, which is "Rapid". And 142kW @ 400V correlates to a current of approx. 350A.

In referring to the on screen options:
  • 5A
  • 16A
  • AC Current
Doesn't sound right to me that you only have those choices on a DC Rapid charger

You'd be sat at the so-called Rapid charger for 8+ hours at only 16A.

As indicated above (I've edited the post slightly for clarity), the "AC current" option will allow the fastest charging. The other options sre for unususl circumstances, e.g. where you are forced to use a weak charge source, like a granny charger via a thin extension cord, or a generator.

The 16A option would limit the charge current to half what a 7kW EVSE (AC "charger") could safely provide.

And the AC Current option (or any of the selections for that matter) only apply for the onboard AC/DC charger ... direct DC charging bypasses it so the selection is meaningless for DC rapid charging. :)
