I've noticed the decorative skin/film over the shiny black parts of the steering wheel are bubbling; and in one area the edge of the trim is breaking up. Before I make a complete idiot of myself, can anyone confirm that this 'film' is or isn't permanent, and could be peeled off, like, say, the protective film on a new phone?

A picture might help here @Aitch1.
I know mine had protective film over the two screens, and the black trim round the gear selector, and on the MG logo on the steering wheel, but nothing on the black parts on the steering wheel.

Cheers Clive. I'll see what I can do. Good info about the screens etc, I'd not noticed those.

Panic over, Clive. It was protective film. I also found a couple of other areas with film on them, but none on the screens or gear selector surround, as you did. I suspect the original surfaces were all protected in this way and the pre-delivery check or final cleaner missed a few odd bits.

I also still have the protective film on the central screen, intentionally left by the seller, whom I thank.
Having the same use of a cell phone, I will try to keep it as long as possible, until it breaks.
I also thought about finding a fixed and resistant protection like those used on phones: has anyone already found it?

I wonder if these are flexible enough to be adapted as a protector against fingernail scratches for the central drive selector, by cutting a round hole large enough for the drive selector and popping it over the top?

No I don't think they will be flexible enough mate.

It'll be a tricky job to cover the gear selector surround, it's contoured in different directions, and it has quite a big raised lip around the gear selector dial, not to mention the difficulty cutting a nice neat hole in the middle.

Thanks Clive. I'll have to give it a rethink and find another substrate that's low tack. Cutting the hole isn't a problem as I'm extremely dexterous! LOL!

I bought some carbon fibre plastic you can get in gloss or matt. Not gave it a go yet I saw something on mg4 thread about customising would cover the D N R indicators but looked good possibly shine through as not thick.
