I'm not sure if I should be posting this here or in Dull Men's Club... but I did a little Excel that can calculate charging costs vs petrol/diesel equivilents.

So this tells me that in almost all cases charging, including public charging, is cheaper than Petrol/Diesel.

Only the 50kwh charger at Tesco is a quid more expensive on a full charge from 30-80.

This is based on 1.47 per litre (current diesel price to me), average 3.5 miles per wkh driving in my MG vs an ICE at 40mpg.

As a fully paid up member of the dull mens club or as we are known in some quarters, the Excel Owners Club, I also have a sheet comparing break even points on fuel costs of EV vs ICE. It really depends on how much you pay per unit of fuel, be that a kW or a litre and the fuel efficiency of the vehicle.

My last diesel vehicle cost ~A$13/100km to fuel.

My MG4 over first 10 months cost ~$4/100km to fuel.

Home charging though is stupid cheap, it's travelling away from home that bumps the overall cost up.

In July my charging at home cost A$0.28/100km.

Is that taking into account, the export money you didn't get?

Yep. Breakdown including foregone feed-in credit:

Code:
JULY 2024:
Mileage: 935.0 km
Energy: 178.7 kWh
Economy: 19.1 kWh/100 km
.
Charging kWh Cost
Solar 53.6 $0.97
Grid Shoulder 3.1 $1.06
Grid Off-Peak 1.9 $0.60
Grid Free 119.9 $0.00
DC Fast Charge 0.0 $0.00
----------------------------------------
TOTAL 178.7 $2.63
.
Charge economy: $0.28/100km

120kWh free, that's cheating. We don't have an option like that. Best I could do is $0.08 but then I'd be charged $0.58 for running the A/C in summer. I haven't worked out yet if that's a cheaper option.

At the moment, we aren't doing too bad with a solar/grid mix.
Trouble is I don't have a distinction from what goes into the car and to other power points in the house. So I can't work out exactly how much power is going into the car.

Owning a diesel which uses 14.7L/100kms costs me $29aud/100kms.

Owning an EV which uses 15.6kwh/100kms costs me (assuming 85% efficiency & not using solar) $5.7aud/100kms.

Being a Dull Man, at just under 6,000 miles I started keeping a record of all our charging and it's cost at the time.

I'd say 85% of our driving is beyond range, so there is a lot of out and about charging in here.

Car is just comping up to 31k

MG4 cost miles MG4 per mile petrol eqiv at 45mpg
£1,158.69 24898 £0.047 £4,032.37

Looking at this reminded me of the first 6 months of EV ownership, keeping track of everything.
Then only keeping track of what I used to ferry the kids around (to claim back from a joint account)
Now using a smart integration to automatically debit my account to pay into the elec bill when I charge at home (rarely)
I don’t even care whether one is cheaper than the other because there’s no point anymore, I even stopped claiming back from the shared pot those 70p here and 25p there. ?
