Economy driving on a long journey

HI, I agree with jto.
When I bought my car in february this year,I had a 650 km journey back home from the dealer in Porto. This journey was approx. 550 km of motorway and 100 km of normal A roads. The complete distance was done in AUTO mode and I started with a 100% battery charge and finished with still 20% left in the battery. The overall fuel consumption was approx. 43MPG -not bad I think for this type of journey. I was lucky as the dealer explained to me how to use the ICE and EV modes to get the most economy. Since then I have averaged a 3.4L/100km (80 odd MPG) over the total mileage of the car which I am very happy with.

Norfolk is nice and flat and i do well driving in EV in the summer when up there like from outside Norwich to Sheringham in EV charge the car back up in the car park at the back of High street then drive back on EV. But in winter you will use the engine more one to keep car warm and window clear but after some miles you be able use a mixture of EV and engine which the car which the will switch back into if you select EV.
The main thing is if are doing a long drive just leave the car in Auto so it decides what mode to use to get the best MPG.

Now that it is December and the temperatures are lower, I find that the ICE does tend to come on at the very start of my journey. However, after having the temperature set for 20 degrees internally, with the recirculation selected, after a few minutes (8-10 minutes), I find that if you then select a lower temperature (in my case 14 degrees) and switch to EV, the car will remain in EV mode for some time (15-20 mins) or at least until the internal temperature falls to below 14 degrees, when the ICE kicks in once more. You can however, override the ICE by simply turning the temperature right down low and continue in EV mode with the fan on maybe power 2-3. It is a case of experimenting, as different cars in different weathers will react differently. It took me a couple of weeks to find my car's optimum settings. When the battery charge drops to about 15% I charge up at home using cheap rate electric.

I have an MG HS plug in, I notice that I have to choose manually what setting to use for battery usage default Low, medium, high .
Any idea which setting is best for a long journey? Going to Southampton about 350 miles from me don’t really want to stop for a few hours to recharge en route.
I understand that you can’t fast charge these batteries.

Don't worry about range, once the battery is discharged continue on petrol.
