So yesterday I went for a dog walk in the snow and came back to find that my key wasn’t opening my 2020 ZS EV. I tried opening the car using the emergency key to get the dogs out of the traffic but it triggered the alarm and I couldn’t figure out how to turn it off. Is there a button somewhere? Once opened how could you use the key to drive the car? Seems pointless having an emergency key if it can’t actually be of any use! Luckily my friend deduced that the key was simply cold and after warming it the alarm magically stopped and I was able to drive home. Have since changed the key battery just in case but what should I have done if it wasn’t just a warning-up issue??

Dont know if it will disable the alarm, but if the key is out of battery you can unlock the car with the key like you did, and pop the keyfob into the rearmost cupholder in between the front seats, i would imagine doing this, would also disable the alarm as the car now detects that the keyfob is present.

The reason this works is, there is a passive immobiliser chip in the keyfob, that will get energized by a coil under the cupholder.

This is essentially the same thing that happens when you insert a key into the ignition lock in a car that has to be started this way. There the coil is just around the ignition keyhole.
