I'd left my MG4 Excite 51 in car park for 2.5 hours. When I returned, it seemed that the key had died temporarily. Only the image of the car lit up and a message said "Place key in backup position". Slight panic for a moment until I recalled the Jerry (NZ) video in which he mentioned this. I placed the key in the console/ arm rest box and everything lit up immediately. After my next stop 10 minutes away, everything was perfectly normal. Relief. I tell myself when these weird things happen, it's just a computer after all.

Did you happen to park near a cell-phone tower? My ZS EV Mark 1 is sensitive to the radio emissions from those, and it's sometimes hard to get it to unlock if I happen to park very near to a tower.

This sounds a bit different, though.

No mobile phone tower. And I've parked in exactly the same spot many times before - though not for as long. A mystery.

Might be worth changing the battery in the fob for a new one? Takes a few seconds and might help!

Any issues with the TPMS sensors by chance ? Not with my 4 but a Chrysler - when one of the sensors went flat / well stopped functioning I couldn’t use the central locking at all until it was removed and replaced as they run on the same frequency as the key.

That's very interesting, gazza. My TPMS sensors often tell me that one tyre pressure is low, even when I've just topped up all tyres. Then it will tell me the same thing on a different tyre. I'll monitor that. Thanks very much.

Is that before you've driven the car a bit? The TPMS sensors power themselves from wheel rotation, so they don't update the pressure reading for a few blocks.
