Hi, New SE SR owner. Just a quick question on security really. If I am in say a car park and lock the car. How far away do I have to be before anyone cant open the doors anymore.
Just concerned that I could still have a opportunist thief open a door as I walk away.

Sorry if this has been asked, but I did do a big search and most lock questions relate to dead battery or being locked in.

I do not have the specific answer, but I would be surprised if the locks were unlocked within say more than 10 meters, probably more like 2 meters.
You can check it by attaching say 20 meters of string to the key fob, and gently pulling it towards you while pushing the door button.
Post the results here pls.

Way less than 10m. If I open the boot with the key in my pocket and leave the key just inside the boot I cannot open the driver’s door when I walk round to it.

Keyless entry only works up to about a metre or so with no obstacles.
When I had the ZS I couldn't open the door if I was turned facing forward and the key was in my right trouser pocket (opposite side to the car). I've not tried that yet with the 4.

More than once, with the key in my pocket, I have stood by the driver’s door and found my wife unable,to unlock the passenger door.

So I had a little play (as you do) as it seems I found a question not commonly asked. Got the answer around 2 - 3 metres before the door cant be unlocked, and it does appear to be a circle around the car, as I got the scenario @dsr mentioned where i put the keyfob on the floor under the drivers door, could open that door fine, but couldnt unlock the passenger door.
So feel a bit better that people wont be running in behind me to steal from my car when i park out in public

My passenger was unable to unlock her side of the car even though I was standing beside the driver's door with the key on my person.

I laid the key on the car's duck tail while I was fiddling with the charger, and the door wouldn't unlock. Even though the boot would presumably unlock with the key in that position. On another occasion I laid the key on a shelf in the garage pretty close to the driver's door, but again no dice.

The arcs within which the key is recognised seem to very specific and pretty tight.
