As of Friday I switched from MG5 FL to MG4 Trophy.

While I do not carry loads these days I was concerned about difference in boot space. It’s hard to tell when just looking at them.

This is the old boot cover I made for the 5 vs the 4 boot floor. The second picture shows what I had to cut off to make it fit. It actually wasn’t as much as I thought. Cat is for real world reference lol

That's interesting to know (y). Does anyone know the max length you can put in the MG4 with rear seats down (e.g. wondering whether skis might fit in space behind rear seats).

Nice cat - is that a BS Standard size cat or a DIN specification one ;)

180 cm or six feet, if you push the passenger seat as far forward as it will go, and put the back upright. It takes a six-foot airbed in the space, nice and neat. Maybe a bit more for something like skis that you could lay diagonally.

I definitely noticed a decrease in boot space from my Peugeot 308 hatch, but to be fair that had the biggest boot in its class upon release. I do find however that I have more boot space available in the sense that I can hide little bits and bobs underneath the false floor in the Trophy. And the addition of an aftermarket frunk.

So all in all it’s a smaller boot but at the same time more functional/efficient in my experience.

That's impressive! Looks like skis will fit then, esp. diagonally as you mentioned. But now I have another question - can the rear seats be folded flat. My BMW folds flat as default, but with a previous Golf I had to either first tip up the rear seat squabs or, for longer trips, remove them completely. TIA.

No they can't although the Trophy has a dual level boot floor which will bring it up a few inches.

@Everest Have you been for a look and a test drive of an MG4?

To do that I pushed the front passenger seat as far forward as it would go and set the back of the seat upright. That gives six feet (180 cm) load bed length on that side, and there was room and to spare. You couldn't carry a passenger like that though. If I needed to carry a passenger as well as the bike I'd have to take the front wheel off the bike.

LOL I am not sure if he is metric or imperial. All his labels have fallen off. He eats his food by kg as you can tell by his size
Must be a metric one then :)

Thanks for the clarification (y). As I'll probably be the passenger then, that might not work - I'll do some measurements next time I'm looking at one.

The other possibility, if the skis are narrow enough, would be to put the ends through between the front seats. I've carried a Christmas tree like that.

Being a "proper" estate car was what sold me on the 5. Sadly estates (and people carriers) are a rarity in the EV world. I miss that part of my old Passat estate, my Berlingo and my even older Espace.
I'd wonder about a VW ID Buzz but the out of my price band.
Just gimme a Berlingo EV equivalent with a decent range.

I'm with you there - I loved the luggage humping capacity of the 5 estate 💪
