Good afternoon,

To confirm, the MG dealerships can charge for a software update as this is an enhancement.

The update is free however, you will be paying for the technician’s time to carry out the update since they must be with the vehicle throughout the update process.

Please note that you are still able to fast charge without the Tesla network.

I hope this has answered your queries, but if you do need any further assistance, do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards,

I don't do that many journeys where I have to rapid charge, so I'm not to bothered about the Tesla fix, and I certainly ain't paying for it. If they want to do it at the service, then that's fine.

Do you think he means Rapid charge?
There isn’t a standard terminology.
This is found on three separate apps I have installed:

This is disingenuous. Of course there are costs involved in what is a repair to enable owners to continue to make full use of the car. In the absence of MG meeting those costs some dealers are unsurprisingly passing them on to customers. The result is that customers are aggravated and MGs reputation plummets ( with me at least).

They are having to rethink the naming of charger output. 50kW isn't really rapid anymore compared to 150-300kW chargers that are becoming more normal.

Yes but is there an ‘international standard’? I mean like an IEEE or ISO or whatever
There is a European (EU) standard which defines Level 1 AC/3kW, Level 2 (3.7-22kW) and Level 3 greater then 22kW AC charging plus any DC charger.
With the advent of 150kW+ chargers a level 4 is added.

It might be worth testing the legality of MG's denial of responsibility for this cost. I subscribe to the Consumers Association (Which?) Legal advice service and could ask them for advice on this.

Which? more generally may also be interested in investigating this issue on behalf of the wider EV using public. Standards matter and I would have thought any public CCS charger should be compatible with MG cars.

MG seems to be very cavalier with its customer care as its not just this issue. I own a ZS EV and was shocked to find out that MG had 'silently' dropped both the panoramic roof and V2L capability from its top models when looking to buy recently, whilst still making these features available to other global markets.

Good shout re getting Which to look at it.

Tbh the only time I tried using a Tesla charger it failed to recognise the car and after I tried to charge from other chargers I had a whole saga of issues that ended up with a software bug that basically shut the car down and it was towed.

It was easily fixed by a software reset - unfortunately that meant it had to wait the weeks until an MG garage could look at it with me carless. I think they reset and updated the software but in my eyes its simply not worth the risk to go anywhere near a Tesla supercharger again.

I'm not sure the Tesla issue caused it but I suspect it did and as there is no real way to reset the software short of an MG garage - no ctrl-alt-del equivalent - I definitely would not recommend even attempting Tesla superchargers. It may work fine but believe me it's not worth the risk - for me that risk ended up with 2x180mile train journeys 6 weeks apart and no car for 6 weeks.

The ctrl-alt-del equivalent for the MG is to disconnect the 12V battery for a short while and then reconnect. This does a reset.
A mantra on these forums for all MG drivers - keep a 10mm spanner in the glove box.

It brings all warnings lights on when you switch on. Drive it a short distance to clear them. That's what happened when I did it.

Maybe it depend on the model. I have the MG4 LR and recently drove down through Normandy charging each way on Tesla rapid chargers with no problems at all. ~120kW to beging with dropping to ~60kW at at 80% charge. My only preparation was to install the Tesla App, which I believe only shows chargers I can use. As part of the setup I told the App that I was driving an MG4.
In case it's relevant:
MPU software Version
SWI69-29958-1100R16
MCU Software Version
69.1.1.1
I would use them again, there were lots of bays, all empty. I didn't have any difficulty making the cable reach sitting in the bay. I guess the best thing to do is go try one as an experiment, when success doesn't matter.
