Hi,

Recently taken delivery of a 22 plate exclusive pre-facelift. Car has done 15k miles.
Car is fantastic so far, covered approx 400 miles in it.
I’ve noticed though what I can only describe as white dust almost like dandruff comes out of the vents. Find I’m having to wipe down the interior most days. I did blast them on fill the other day and it seemed to stop after a bit but days later it’s coming back again.
Any ideas on this one?
Having researched online I’ve seen suggestions that it come be coming off the aircon evaporator?

Not seen anything like that in mine, can you take it back to the dealer to get it checked?

May have to, it was serviced back in November by the previous owner but I don’t know if the cabin filter got changed so it could be a simple case of swapping this over.

Hi, has it had two services done as it should have paper work for what was done. I have covered 48k milage and never had the issue that you have.

1 service done in November at 15k miles.
It’s comes from Cinch who did the service and it’s just listed as an interim service. Doesn’t go into detail what’s been done.

They don't do much at the first service.
If it wasn't done at a MG dealership then it won't have the AA cover.
Worth checking if the 7 year warranty is still in force too.
It is possible that they put a AC cleaner through it, I have never done one but if it was done poorly it might blow out stuff.

When I bought my 5 from Motorpoint ,they swore it had been serviced . When I finally received the paperwork it was a pre delivery check not a service . You'd be wise to check with MG

I’ve got an invoice that just states interim service but doesn’t detail what was done.
Car will be 2 years old in April so I’ll put it into MG to be done. Will ask them to check these white bits too if it’s still doing it by then

You might like to have a gander at this page:
There are others, more recent, from various models. Google car aircon AC white flakes, for example

Have had a MG5 for 2 1/2 years - two services - no issue with white dust. I gather that the service involves replacement of the pollen filter so I can only imagine that the problem may be due to it not having been replaced. If you are able to, I'd recommend that you get the car serviced by Cleevelys of Cheltenham - they seem to be one of the foremost non-dealerships who specialise in servicing EVs. They also offer mobile servicing and I notice that some of their customers are as far away as Yorkshire. Hope you get it sorted.

Car booked in start of April for MG to take a look
I’ve attached some pics where you can see the powder in the vents. Worst in these side ones for the windows but does come out of all of them.

Just an update on this for anyone following. Car has been in today and they agree it’s coming from the evaporator. They weren’t overly concerned and want to try cleaning it first.
I suspect this will be one of those cans of foam they put in through the drain port.
I’ll let them try that first and see, I’m not completely convinced that it’s not going to need a new evaporator but it’ll be a big job if the dash has to come out so I’m guessing they’d rather avoid it if possible. It’s another few weeks before it goes back in but I’ll post another update after.

Mine has developed the same behaviour, what was the outcome on yours, is it worth getting it into MG ? Or will they just clean it and hope it doesn't eat itself up and loose the refrigerant in the process

I very much suspect this is aluminium oxide dust. they'll have cheaped out and not bothered to anodise the evaporator to stabilise the alloy, so it's developing surface corrosion, which on aluminium is a white oxide powder. This is then getting blown off and out the vents with the airflow. You'll probably notice it happening more after a period when the car isn't getting used daily, so it builds up on the surface, then gets blown through the next time the aircon is used.

Hi, sorry I’ve only just seen your message. So after it was cleaned it was still happening. The dealer were going to contact MG directly and get back to me and surprise surprise I never heard anything back. Over the summer though it had pretty much stopped. I do still notice now some flecks here and there but nothing like it was. If it’s starting to happen on yours then I’d maybe get it to your dealer and see what they say, your dealer might be better than mine and actually dig a bit deeper and find out exactly what’s causing the problem.

I`ll get it in in spring for the annual service and have them look at that as well. It`s minor and not worth the trouble of not having the vehicle for a few days if it can be coupled with the service.

Could it be polythene? Polystyrene
It`s not, it`s white crumbly tiny flakes, kind of like the white stuff that develops on battery terminals. It has diminished now as a few days a week I defrost it with the fan at full pelt, must have pushed most of it out.
