Driving my MG4 Trophy home from Kent, I got the message "please take control of vehicle" in red on display twice. Both times I was driving in cruise control, OPD, lane keep assist disabled, on a dual carriageway when the message flashed up and the car dramatically lost speed as it dropped out of cruise control - not good when you are in the outside lane overtaking. It's the first time I have had this in the 6 months I have had the car. Just wondering if it is a glitch in the matrix or a developing fault? I am due for the 1 year service soon so will mention it there.

My car has done this but only when I expected it. I was on an empty stretch of highway and was wondering what the car would do if I would say pass out or something. So I took my hands of the wheel with Adaptive cruise on, lane keep assist, and ELK. Within a few seconds it gently reminds me to hold the steering wheel, while still keeping the car in the centre of the lane. After a few more seconds I get the red warning you described above.

I was quite surprised to notice the lane keep assist then turns off, so the car started "bouncing" between the lines on ELK, but the cruise control maintained the set speed. After three ELK interventions (which are quite jolting) I decided I'd seen enough, but it did leave me wondering what would happen in reality, do I bounce around until I hit something? It is interesting to see your cruise control turned itself off, which is a behaviour I would expect in my scenario. Although off course not a good thing in your scenario.

I believe the car realises when you're not holding the wheel because you don't make tiny motions, as it also once warned me when I only had one hand lightly on the bottom of the wheel. Perhaps you have some sort of broken sensor? Or like you said a software glitch.

I had this with LKA on a non MG a few years ago - it didn't like the LKA kicking in more than 3 times without any resonse from me, so it beeped and turned off LKA. Perhaps the LKA had self enabled on yours or the forward collision detect can induce a similar response 🤷.

I occasionally get the warning on the screen for no readily apparent reason, but the car has never slowed down or dropped out of cruise control.

Of course you get it all the time if you're in TJA mode and following the car in front at about 3 mph. I sometimes shout, "you're doing fine, carry on, stop bothering me!" at the car.

This may happen in a foggy or rainy weather which blocks the cameras facing forward. It has happened a couple of times for me > allways a surprise. It's not a fault rather normal function.

Does it reply? 😉🙂

You must be actively holding the wheel then. It seems it needs some sort of resistance to the turning of the wheel to be reassured that you're still there and still alive.

I had this flash up randomly even though hands on the wheel in stop start traffic so who knows 💩

All I know is I swiftly turned down most alerts to the lowest sensitivity such as front collision etc. As also had that randomly brake when the car in front was probably 10 metres and I was already braking at 10mph or so in traffic.
