Ahh...those were the days......

Beer was around 16p a pint I seem to recall.....

Here up North, a pint was 13p in 1971.
£1.50 would get you 8 pints, 10 fags, some fish and chips and the bus home. ;)

Hard to believe them prices !.
But I guess the comparison between car prices and earning it’s all relative ?.
To think, the nice shiny red paint on my car, was more expensive than a complete Mini back in the day !.
I was working on most of this cars when serving my time as a Tech back in the day.
My gross salary was £5 per week and had to pay my bus fair out of this !.
I still have the wage slip that I use from time to time, to give my children a reality check.
When I fully qualified after a fully 5 year apprenticeship, my gross salary increased to a massive £52 a week.
It was like winning the pools !.
The main dealer had been using our services from the forth year and paying us at the normal apprentice rates of pay.
It was a massive dealership with about 20 lifts and 30 Tech’s
Same number of people in the body shop and the same in the parts department.
10 apprentice’s all working under the supervision ( only if required ) of a workshop manger.
I have no complaints about the training I was given.
The dealership was so big, it gave the opportunity for apprentices to spend three months in every department.
Everything from the parts department, to the body shop, paint shop, reception services and the warranty department.
Only a short time spent in the sales department to protect company data!.
We all worked for the same company, but each department was run completely separate from each other.
Work carried out in the workshop, for the body shop or the sales department etc was directly charged back to each relative department, It also worked the other way around.
It is the very same after all of these years, each department charging another, for the work they have carried out.
Some things never change !.
