Morning all,

Just a quick message to ask for everyone to check their tyres if at all possible. The wife's ZS went in for it's first service yesterday and got a rather alarming message from the service team a few hours after dropping it off....

3/4 tyres has egg shaped deformations out of the inner sidewalls, closer inspection confirms no damage, tyres were inflated to spec. There wasn't any vibrations or shake that gave any indication of an issue either. Warranty won't cover anything in relation to the tyres, but dealer kindly offered a 50% goodwill discount on replacing all 4, not a terrible end result, effectively cost us £300 so not as painful as could be. Not come across this on more than one tyre at a time in my two decades of driving, so thought I'd mention it in case there is an errant wonky batch floating around.

Been replaced with Continental Premium Contact 6's all the way around so hopefully that will put any debacles to bed.

What brand was it? Original tyres from new?
Sorry for the delay chap, we've been away for a few days visiting family. It was the original tyres that came on the car, the Maxxis Bravo's. They've done 13k since the car was new so it was a bit of a suprise, especially when my work fleet ZS LR I've been using for 6 months have the same tyres without a problem and I've seen dozens of MGs with the same. I'm assuming incorrect storage before fitting or transport damage rather than a systemic failure as a whole. I've reached out to Maxxis directly and excluding a bit of language barrier, they are receptive and seem to want to put things right.

The original Gen1 and the early Gen2 models on the ZS EV had Michelin Primacy 3 fitted as standard from the factory.
We have them on our 19 reg Gen1 and on our 22 reg Gen2 Trophy.
The factory must have been offered the Maxus tyres at a better price !.
The Conti’s are a better upgrade IMHO.

You're right, the 5, HS (outgoing model), some 3's and the ZS all moved over to the Maxxis; as you said, offered a lower price or working on production cost reduction of current models. The new HS come on Bridgestone, the 4 is on Conti's and Bridgestone as OEM and the 3 Hybrid comes on Kumho. I'd be willing to bet that the 4 and new HS will move onto cheaper rubber as they come towards the twilight of their production.

The Conti's are a much better tyre, so I have no complaints though.

Had Bridgestones on my previous VW Golf PHEV factory fit, could not wait to get them off !.
They had terrible traction in the wet and noisy, never again.

Well, I went for the cheapest B B rated tyres at £48 each, to fix before next MOT ... Will let you know how it goes... Used cheap BB rated tyres on my old car and never had any reason to complain...

Personally I feel that tyre chose on an EV is worthy of some well time spent considering all options myself.
One of the big advantages of an EV over a ICE counterpart, is the lack of back ground engine noise etc invading the cabin space.
The lack of engine noise just makes the ride experience, totally different and improved.
The second noise problem entering into the cabin space, is transmitted via tyres to road surface contact.
This type of cabin noise, can be increased in volume IF a high DB rated tyre choice is used at all four positions on the car.
Reducing the back ground noise from the lack of an engine in an EV is great, but then increasing the road surface noise, as result of used a higher DB rated tyre choice, could be seen as counter intuitive maybe ?.
Harder compound tyres ? will generally have better longevity for sure, but can be found to have less grip in wet weather conditions and snow of course.
Different people are therefore left making the difficult decision of “What make of tyre” should I therefore go for ??.
Softer compound tyres generally offer better grip and greater traction when trying to make a quick get away.
As a result of using a softer compound, the tyre wear if increased of course.
I like to aim for the lowest DB rating I can find on a quality make when buying tyres.
Maintaining a low noise cabin environment is very important to me with a EV.
Otherwise I could have bought a noisy oil burner fitted with knobbly tyres and arrived stressed out ?.
