My wife closed the passenger side door after work this week and heard what she said sounded like a gun shot and discovered the rear window smashed.
Has anyone else had this? The car was booked in for an unrelated issue the next morning with the dealer so we took it there early to see if anything can be done under warranty. They've now had it two days and still can't answer if it'll be covered. Anyone have experience with this? Heating elements were not on and the door wasn't closed any harder than you'd expect.

Was the car new to you?

The hatch has probably been shut too hard at some point in its life.

Just the tiniest of defects can also eventually cause the glass to shatter.

The rear door being shut was just a coincidence.

It would have probably gone the next time the hatch was shut.

I used to run a pub and you could drop a pint glass on the floor and it would sometimes bounce and not break.

You could then, sometime in the future have the glass seemingly self destruct into thousands of pieces.

Good Luck trying a warranty claim.

A friend of mine had a similar issue with his Toyota Yaris Mk2, he just came out one cold morning to find the rear window had shattered. The very curved feature of the glass can have stress in it, and as it is fitted rigidly to the rear tailgate this can build up, exacerbated by temperature extremes and even slight impacts that eventually cause the glass to shatter on its own.

I had this on my BMW Z4 : softtop, which was a nightmare as you cant just replace the glass (its stitched into the roof). Fortunately managed to find a whole new roof with window for approx £200.

Back to the original post, no it won't be covered by warranty, but it should be covered by your car insurance, with no loss to NCB.

A week after dropping it off the dealer has phoned to say they will repair under warranty and they have a quicker turn around time than via insurance. So pretty positive. Hoping to have it back finally early next week.
Excellent news!! Had a similar experience with a Seat years ago. The dealer told me that it happens sometimes as the seals are so good that it almost creates air pressure build up inside, so much so that when a door is closed, the pressure inside is so high that something has to give. Whether this is true I have no idea but it sounded plausible to me
