After a couple of times recently when attempting to start the car showed the ‘HV Battery Shutdown message’ I noticed the 12V battery was showing about 11.8V. I popped my booster pack on and it started instantly - once started, the dash showed 14.6V for the battery. So, I suspect my 12V battery is dying after almost 3 years - also looks a little moist on top, but maybe the last service added protective spray?

Anyway - although tempted by a top end Yuasa or Bosch, I opted for this Exide Premium. Seemed like a decent capacity for the price (64Ah vs 55Ah for OEM), CCA isn’t really relevant (640A vs 530A OEM) on an EV. Registration search seems to suggest an AGM battery but opted for a standard version.

I’m waiting for the day it happens to me. I’m still investigating, I’d have thought AGM would take the discharges a bit better (let’s face it they are for stop start cars which do all manner of things regarding when they charge). I don’t know enough about the chemistries/make up to decide if it would be safe to swap a flooded starting battery (which I’m pretty sure the original is) for an AGM or even if a leisure battery could be properly handled by the car?

Good to know that message looks like a symptom.

I debated an AGM but figured that since there is no cranking current, then stop/start features isn’t an issue for an EV so no real discharges like an ICE or hybrid has. Even regen which is mentioned on some data sheets is all handled by the HV battery.

This is just the charging voltage so tells you nothing about the battery.
Edit : ah, the 14.6V reading. Yep - only mentioned that to show that charge was happening once I used boost pack to start the car - so more likely battery issues than a dc-dc inverter problem. It’s the sub 12V reading when HV battery disconnected that will be the battery voltage. I should carry my multimeter to check in case it happens again.

I had the HV warning a few times so left the 12V on a charger all day and the issue hasn't come back.

Changed mine yesterday, went smoothly once I found the correct socket for the EVCC module and battery holder. Error messages went after a few moments driving.

Price was fair and used a 5% code from a YouTube channel I follow. Still think the standard version of this battery would have sufficed and still exceeded OEM spec.

Hope it works out for you! Preparing for the inevitable by watching these threads.

I’ve never had any trouble with Tanya tbh. Back in the mists of time on a large 3.5L I had they were nearly 50% cheaper for the exide than euro.

Lovely girl Tanya never any trouble, but I get my batteries from Tayna. ?

Glad to see this thread as I've seen the HV battery warning a few times which caused me some concern but also noticed my battery voltage below 12V few times so I figured it may need replacing.
I bought my car last month and it's a 2021 model with only 11k miles so may have sat unused for long periods. I've also heard EV's and PHEV's can be hard on their 12V batteries.
I'll keep an eye on the situation and report back.

Edit, I just checked the battery voltage this morning (Sat) after a week driving around 1k miles and it was at 12.6V so not too bad. I'll still keep an eye on it though.

Out of interest - is there any problem with using a leisure battery? My 5 is coming up to 3 years old and I have a spare leisure battery I bought as an expensive mistake whilst on Orkney.....

This may or not apply in your situation 'Biffo', but if I press the Start button then put the car into D(rive) or R(everse) before the "Ready" notification and bong, I see the "HV Battery Shutdown" message. I usually do this when I'm in a hurry to get moving, but if I wait just 1 extra second for the "Ready" notification then I don't get this. Guess I'm just impatient - hope this helps ?

That might be why I'm seeing it as I'm likely to do this. The startup software seems to be a little flaky in the Pre Facelift cars
