Has anybody had this message on screen.... 'Please Release Steering'. The car is dead until the message is cleared.

Does the car mean the steering lock ? And no I never even saw that message appear on mine....

You tell me! I'll contact the dealer on Monday to see what they make of the message!

My dealer has no idea what the message means! Their less than helpful view was go and call MG Assistance that is actually the AA.

Yes I have had this message and YES the car is dead until the message clears itself. You are right the dealers have no idea generally about the car and so are usually useless.

I had the same issue this week. it turned out that the steering wheel was locked. I turn off the car, back on (2 press on start but no foot on the brake pedal), turn the steering wheel manually (with a little bit of force). Turned the car off and started it, and it worked. I have to say it was quite confusing.

I had this issue today with the engine running. I couldn’t get it in gear and I couldn’t get the engine off anymore. More than confusing. After 8 min of trying logic and illogic I could turn the engine off. Problem solved for now. Until another MG surprise pops up.

Yes happened today. 17/05/2024
The car would not turn off, would not go into drive or reverse. The message on the screen says please release steering.
I kept moving the steering wheel to no effect. Eventually tried the power on/off button without pressing the brake. And the system all came alive...
So all ok again. At the moment

I just had this happen today on my MG 5 EV.
Had the message "please release steering" the car wouldn't turn off and the gear would only go to neutral.
Rang the road assistance and said it would take maybe an hour for help.

I tried all the above tips, but was unsure about moving the steering wheel back and fourth. Put the charge cable in to see if that would help without charge. Nothing.

Then I tried the central locking ? button. When pressed the engine shut down. When I started it again it worked. So try this if this happens. I don't know if that is the secret. But it helped me!!!
Let's just hope it doesn't happen again. It seems the MG EV's sometimes have a mind of their own.

Your advice was a lifesaver in a very difficult situation! Thank you.

The HV battery had switched off, which left me unable to stop the vehicle or engage any gears. Even though I put the car in reverse, it continued to move forward down the slope because the reverse gear wasn't functioning. Additionally, I received an error message stating the steering wheel was locked.

Thanks to your tip, I was able to turn off the vehicle, and after a few minutes, I restarted it. Everything returned to normal and worked perfectly.

I had exactly the same problem a few weeks ago. I was very confused, and honestly don't know what I did to fix it.
