Hi everyone! I'm excited to share that I'm getting my first-ever EV this week, the MG4 Standard Range Edition. However, my dealer just called to inform me that the car is currently at an MG service center. They said they're replacing a couple of hoses in the EV transmission due to a leak. Should I be worried about this? Is it a serious issue? Could it leak or break again? The car is pretty much brand new (2023) and has only done around 7,000 miles, so I'm surprised that MG had to recall it. I appreciate everyone's help! Thanks! ?

Ours is a 23 reg and no issues. Sounds like they are getting on top of it.

I wouldn't lick up the car, though, however good looking it is!

Does yours have the rear wiper? If it doesn't then it's a Phase 1 / Rev. 1 / Mark 1 car which was built in 2022 or early 2023. Early cars - especially those built in 2022 - were prone to oil leaks from the reduction gearbox. MG had about 3 goes at finding a fix for that issue. (Mine was one of the affected cars, but since the last fix there's been no further signs of leaking).

That's the only thing I can think of re. what your dealer is doing.

Hi yes it does I think? On auto trader it says it has rear wipers. I'm not sure if that's true or not. is there a way to know?

Hi what does your last sentence mean? Don't pick up the car? Is it that serious?

[ Edit moderator: The original title said "Licking up car this week". I've corrected the spelling. ]

That's a Phase 1 car then, with an early 2023 registration. As such it may have been susceptible to the oil leak, and they're resolving that issue. Nothing to worry about as long as it gets fixed. :)

Phase 1 is still okay? What is the difference 1 and 3? Nothing major right? ?

As siteguru noticed, it was a reference to the lick/pick typo in your subject/title!

Your car looks like it is the same as ours and we haven't had any leak issues. Sounds like MG are sorting it so you should be fine.

I was worried about not having a back wiper but it hasn't been an issue at all.

I think you've made a good choice - grey is the best colour!

As above, there is NO Phase 3 car, only Phase 1 and Phase 2. (Or version 1 and version 2). That is very different to 1-phase (or single phase) which relates to charging ... if you wanted 3-phase charging then you would need an early (Phase 1 / Version 1) long range car ... a Trophy or an SE LR which both came with the 64 kWh NMC battery pack and a 3-phase 11 kW rated onboard charger. But these cars have also been susceptible to CCU failures ... I'm not aware of any SE SR cars (51 kWh LFP pack) with such failures.

How do I check if I can do 3 phase charging on my car?

Look at the Type 2 section of the charge port of the car ... if there are metal pins inside the L2 and L3 slots then your car should support 3-phase AC charging.

If your car has a rear wiper then it won't support it, as this was one of the changes MG made.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you charge at home you will only have a single phase electricity supply in the UK and when you charge away on a fast charger they'll be DC anyway.

Don't confuse "phase 1" with "single phase" or "1 phase". "Phase 1" refers to an early revision (submodel), as opposed to the later "phase 2" cars. For example: "Phase 2 cars have the rear wiper but not the 3-phase on-board charger".

"Single phase" or "three phase" refers to the ability to charge with one or three electrical phases respectively. A three phase on-board charger is able to charge 50% faster (11 kW versus around 7 kW) than a single phase on-board charger, IF and only if the electricity supply and EVSE (AC "charger") supports it.

Edit: "Phase 1" etc are another example of MG choosing unfortunate terms. Like "equalising" instead of the established "balancing", and so on. I assume that it's British MG that makes these kinds of decisions, not someone in China, so they really ought to know better.
