Tailgate - black plastic bar?

Hi all,
Nothing urgent….just a curiosity question.

Anybody know what the black plastic bar (immediately below the number plate) is?
Does it have a sensor in there? Can’t figure what it’s purpose is if it hasn’t.

It's just a bodge to cover up the fixing holes for Chinese number plates. There's a thread on the subject, and some solutions, if you have a look. It'll probably be several pages back by now.

Rear 2number plate option

I’ve found a online UK number plate supplier who will supply this size plate which enables you to remove the black plastic bar under the rear number plate and replace it with this size. I think it looks tidy!

Square number plate

Wondering if anyone has put a square number plate on the rear? And what size square plate fits if so... Holes in tailgate are pre drilled and clearly designed for a square plate which is why the long standard plates rub the edge of the MG5 badge. Mine also has a black strip screwed over to cover...
