Today’s MG ZS EV Road Trip - 4.8 Miles Per KWh (Smashed WLTP)

Who says the MG ZS EV causes range anxiety....

Today I completed a 236.1 miles road trip, both trip totals were reset, no heating or fans, but sun roof on tilt. Roads were mixed, but mainly the M25 with a mixture of A roads and other normal pedestrian roads.
Car was fully charged and showed 179 miles of range on the GOM in ECO with HVAC switched off.
My total volts on fully charged were showing 449, which gives me confidence that after 17200 miles I’ve not suffered any battery degradation.
First charge was at 142.3 miles with remaining estimate of 59 miles on the GOM, average at that point was 4.7 miles per KWh.
Charged for 35 mins and added 23.63 KWh of power.
Trip continued to 236.1 miles @ 4.8 miles per KWh, remaining GOM showed 73 miles
Based on a 42 KWh battery capacity at 4.8 miles / KWh I make today range about 201.6 miles
I am happy with that and it smashes the WLTP results, speed on motorway was about 60-65, but I did concentrate on keeping the acceleration within the efficiency zone.

Great figures Mark. And that is realistic driving too at 60-65 on dual carriageways which is a good average (especially for the M25 car park lol). I see from your Rapid charge you managed an average rate of 40kWh starting at ~28% which is promising. Presumably the ambient temperature was in the teens? I haven't been able to get more than 36kWh rate even from as low as 22% but that was during the winter time.

Seeing your figures today has given me the hope that I was expecting when I bought the car last September. Thanks for sharing your experience. I look forward to showing you similar figures of my planned journeys after lockdown later this year.

Yes the charger seemed to build very quickly it was a new BP Pulse charger....the thing here to note is that my top end speeds were good, but what I really focused on was the rate of acceleration as it’s very easy to be heavy footed an build speed quickly, but you do use so much more energy 50-60 % I was trying very hard to keep in the 20-30% efficiency zone. Once you moving it’s very easy...it moving from standing still that is harder.

I didn’t get anywhere near the earlier 6.2 that some quoted, but will try again when the temperature increases a bit more....perhaps in the 18 or 20 degree bracket.

Agreed that you need to be light footed, but that said you are “a real human” and the cars pedal is very light too.....?

If the power needle goes over 20% I get a severe pain in my right leg which makes me lift off the accelerator lol.

If the power needle doesn't go over 20% when accelerating from standstill it takes approximately 1 minute to get 0-30mph and I hear lots of loud noises from behind me.

Inspired by Marks’ WLTP range beater I completed a 3 day trial today to prove my driving style will achieve the plans I have for longer journeys later this year in the ZS. Starting with a full charge my target is to reach Milton Keynes comfortably knowing there are a multitude of Rapids to continue North on a 20-80% top-up charge.

Interesting to note the GOM predicted a 160 mile range using historical data but dropped to 137 miles after resetting the Accumulated trip to 0. The 3 consecutive day journeys were over a similar route on A and B country roads (no town driving or dual carriageways) at ambient temperatures of ~12, ~14 and 10 degrees C achieving 4.5m/kWh, 4.8m/kWh and 4.1m/kWh. Overall average 4.5m/kWh.

This proves to me my normal driving style of keeping up with the traffic and maximum speed limits where possible means the ZS can achieve in excess of 4m/kWh. I have yet to trial dual carriageway figures but Sussex has only motorways in the extreme North and West of the county so will mean a longer trip to get any meaningful data. I plan to do this next week perhaps when the temperatures might be up in the teens again.

To summarise, on a full charge and initial GOM range of 137 I achieved 151 miles with 25 miles left on the GOM at 20% SoC. More than enough to arrive at MK (about 135 miles) for a convenient top-up. I’m pleased with that and liking my MG ZS more every day.

Yes I tried to make it as "normal" as possible so all default settings and HVAC ON but a neutral setting which was comfortable for me. I wanted it to be realistic so I can just relax and enjoy the car just like jumping into any car and driving from A to B.

BMS update can wait until September service unless other problems arise before then.
