I have a static caravan with a max output of 16 amps, the supply lead to the van is via a meter and normal commando type lead is used to supply power to the van, the same lead you would use if powering a touring caravan or camping with a tent.

Is it possible to run the caravan with V2L ? the site is a 70 mile round trip from home and my MG4 has a 50kWh battery so there should be enough to power the van for at least 1 night (normal winter nightly use is 8/10kWh) so can anyone help? is this idea feasible and if so is possible to purchase a commando plug and type 2 plug lead as opposed to a type 2, 3 point plug lead.....Thank you.

Sounds like a great idea.

I use my car to charge a 500Ah battery bank overnight (Solar only, off grid) in the winter and that uses 10% of my cars battery.
I would have thought you could be plugged in for quite a while with no problem at all.

I've still got an old 3 pin to 13 amp plug adapter knocking about and that's all you would need (also the adapter for the v2l)
Readily available on eBay at circa £15.

Ah brilliant thank you, I am however concerned about using 3pin to 13amp adapter,( I have one kicking around also) as the connection with the car would not be waterproof, do you think this will work with a direct connection with the van MG Vehicle to Load V2L Discharge Cable they are expensive but the saving made could make it worth my while.... thanks

I really wouldn't worry about it.

They are designed to get wet.
As long as you don't let it become submerged you will be fine.

And......if you were taken surprise by a biblical downpour, it will just trip out, no harm done.

Ar the end of the day m8, do whatever makes you comfortable, and I still think it's a great idea.

Be really interested to know how long you can stay plugged into your own mobile powerstation.

You won't have anything in the van that exceeds the suggested 2.2kW output from the car so happy days.

There are posts on here suggesting anything upto 6kW can be pulled from the car, but I've never asked for more than 2kW and it's been dandy.?

Yes it is easily possible, as i have tried this on my static.
The cable you mention is a much better idea then when I tried with my ordinary 3 pin V2L adaptor.

I was a little mindful of any rain, yes you are safe as the caravan would trip on its rcd protection. However it is a major inconvenience considering fridge/freezers and boilers etc tripping out.

All depends on what you pay to charge up your car compared to caravan supply prices. also if you run low on charge to get you home !

Apologies if I did not word that correctly. It's not the V2L cable that I am after it's how you connect the V2L to your batteries ? I presume you connect to a 240v battery charger ? If so, which one are you using ? Thanks for the reply.

Here it is on its own...

I'm quite interested in this idea, although I'm at such an early stage with my system (and no winter experience yet) that I'm not sure if I'd need it. Any idea what sort of charger I'd need to handle a 9.5 kWh GivEnergy battery?

Hi,
I live in New Zealand, in an offgrid tiny house.
  • I use 12 360w solar panels, a Victron 5kwW all in one unit, 4 Narada 200Ah lead carbon batteries, with Honda generator as backup.
  • This is connected to the house via a caravan plug.
  • The tiny house is 240V.
  • I have the 64kWh MG4.
My question are:
1. can I use the V2L function to plug the car into the caravan plug when needed to run the house? (mainly in winter at times when there is no sunshine - I find the generator temperamental).
2. are such plugs available?
3. do I need to power down the Victron system before unplugging the caravan plug to the house, and plugging the car into it to power the house?
Any advice much appreciated :)
Alex

I use the "Gen IN" on my inverter straight from the car.
As a back up I also have a 48V charger which can also be powered straight from the car.

I use about 10% of the car's battery per 12 hours of use.

Thanks for that, that's what I wanted to do originally. BUT I have been told the polarity with the Victron is different which means the RCD might fail on appliances inside my caravan (tiny house). My house is 240V not 12V. Is yours 12V? In which case it's ok?

No. 240V for me.
There will be a solution out there for you.

You can step down or step up to your hearts content.

Have a look at a caravan 'centric' power converters.

I was thinking of putting one of those garden rooms at the bottom of my.............
Garden! 🤣

Anyhoo, I was going to kit it all out with 12V bits and bobs.

You don't use the Victron? The polarity on yours is ok? Wonder if I should go-ahead and try it anyway lol

I bought this to power the house.

5000W is plenty if you manage it well.
